What do I need to do to prep for painting?

Ok, I'm getting ready to repaint my 92 RS because the previous owners slapped down a realy crappy one coat job and it looks like hell. What all do I need to do to get this ready to be painted so i don't have to pay for prep by the people who are painting it? How hard is it? and is it even worth it?

Here is the short version. Remove all lenses, moldings, handles, emblems, etc. from the car. Sand the car down. Repair any dents. Prime with a good sealer primer, then a sandable primer. Sand again. Prime a guide coat, and sand again. Fix anything you see now. Prime again with sandable primer. Sand a final time. Mask off headlights, windows, and anything else you don't want painted. Load onto a trailer and take to the painter.

hellz yeah, shops charge $40/hr to do all of that, if you have it done then there goes a huge chunk of the bill.

yeah it does take a chunk of money, but if you dont know exactly what you are doing, it may even look worse than it was before, and if the painter isnt satisfied about the prep he is gonna wanna do it over again and then you will have to pay for it anyways. i already went through this and i talked it over with my body guy, he said i could do it but if i wanted it to be perfect and for him to gaurantee it, (since he is doing it on the side) that he would do the body work, and after watch/helping down at the shop on my car, i am soo glad i left it to him. i would have messed up royally if i had done it. THAT IS WHY THEY HAVE ALL THE FANCY TOOLS! THEY ARE EXPERTS!!
