removing old *** brake dust from rims?
I got me a set of front 87 IROC rims that came off a car that must have been sitting for years and the inside of the rims are just cakes with brake dust and road ****!...and the stuff will not come off by just washing it?
what can I used to clean the inside of the rims? they are like thick *** black/brown grim
I was think of getting some EASY OFF oven cleaner or that stuff for grills.
whatcha think?

I would try something easier before resorting to chemicals. Try using detergeant instead of car soap, and use a more abrasive scrubbing tool. I normally use a sponge, so try something with bristles (i think thats how its spelled). It might come off.

I use a scrubby brush, you can try using something gritty but not harsh. Or there is always the stuff that eats the clear coat off aluminium rims, brillo pads "steel wool" or sandpaper.
As for easy off, don't know what lye will do to the rims. Try to use something gelly or sticky, so you can let it soak?
Remember to preform regular cleanings from now on, and use one of the teflon? repellents. they seem to work ok for me. Unless the wheels are chromed, normally I never notice the "inside" of them, so long as the face is spotless. The inside is less noticeable.

Eagle One Wheel Cleaner has worked good for me, but mine wasn't caked on there like that. Worth a shot?
You can actually see the cleaner start to melt the brake dust off your rims if you let it sit.

Re: removing old *** brake dust from rims?
Go to napa and pick up some ALuminum Cleaner. It comes in a spray bottle for like 15 bucks, and it comes in a 2 litre jug for like 20$. I used the stuff on my rims, made them shine like new. THe guy at napa said truckers mix it with water and a pressure washer to clean the chrome off their rigs. It works really good. Be sure to wear gloves and i used a rough paint brush to apply it on. Its probably best if the tires are not on it when you do this as it is an abrasive chemical. But it is amazing. Just let it sit on the rim and it will get the stuff loose, than spray a hose on the rim and repeat till its shiny.

Re: removing old *** brake dust from rims?
I went ahead and went to the dollar store and picked up a can of oven cleaner for a buck!....took that stuff right off after letting it sit for a few.
I also sprayed the front of the rims cause im going to attempt to polish them. So I let the oven cleaner cook off the clear coat too.
worked for me!

Re: removing old *** brake dust from rims?
I tried many of the things above on my turbo casts wheels, which are a rough cast, probably similar to the back of your wheels...
I used Eagle One Etching Mag Wheel Cleaner, silver and blue bottle.
Spray, wait 30 seconds, rinse off... Like magic...
Since had the wheels clear powder coated, now easily cleans with water and soap...

Re: removing old *** brake dust from rims?
If I knew he was going to polish or reclear them. Then it'd been a hell of a lot easier to figure out chemicals that would be a bit tougher.
my womans rims are brand new 30k on em, stuff wipes off the front and needs a sponge on the back, reaching the back is the problem.
Glad it worked, when i clean my steels and turbo's I will use oven cleaner "they're garbage and missmatched, but they make the car roll"

Re: removing old *** brake dust from rims?
there's many different things you can do with different types of rims, i am a detailer for a body shop and i've learned to let de-greaser soak on the rim for about 5-10 minutes, then scrub with a brush and then wash off. and after that if its a wheel i can use steel wool with take window cleaner and steel wool to it to get the rough stuff. and finally get a reel good polish and i use a power ball mini with a drill then wipe clean with a micro fiber
