4th gen stuff in a 3rd gen formula (the swap)
4th gen stuff in a 3rd gen formula (the swap)
hey guys , if anyone has been interested in this swap, just to let you know i plan on making a website when i find the time, to help people who might want to do this swap i myself im not finished ,a few odds and ends to finish up, and the major problem , electrical gauges and what to do about it , but if anyone has any guestions just let me know , i will be glad to help
UH can you say yes... I can get a 95 cam complete interior for 500 bucks.. including everything... The site would be a great help though. Did you have any trouble ripping the old stuff out and hooking the new dash up? besides the gauges(I plan in using a complete Auto-light set up)....

Get over yourself friend. I'd think you'd be a little bit more mature being 40+ years old. I guess age does not equate to maturity. It's his car - if he likes it then it's all good. As you-of-the-keen-intellect noted, most everyone else digs it - matter of fact YOU were the only one that didn't. Maybe YOU are the odd fire chicken here. Maybe if you didn't have something to add to the post, you shouldn't have bothered. His is a pretty impressive accomplishment - not something pathetically simple like, say, oh... adding a K & N air filter.
HEY HEY HEY! - Don't get mad I'm just spinnin' my prop...

Looks nice. I'd like to see a 4th gen interior in a 3rd gen in person. My friend has a 93 Z and the interior looks pretty much like that. Great job with the swap.

Maybe it's just me... but 72 BuickGSX kills your (you being 85 T/A WS6
) cars interior... I'm usually one that likes a stock look... but that is much nicer than the normal 3rd gen interior. I'm not quite sure why you choose to start a flame war. If you want, your welcomed to take make a post just for people to vote on which interior, if they could have either, they would choose to have. This is judging interior only. Post one sometime.

I have a lot of questions, sorry.
1. How hard was it to remove the original dash, and what needed to be removed during the process?
2. Was the length of the new dash very close to the length of the orig., and was there any cuting invloved
3. What type of dye (Brand, place of purchase) was used to color the dash? How long has it been on there, and how is it holding up?
4. Did the orig. steering column match up to the location in the new dash?
5. Do you have any closeup shots of the doorpanels? I would like to see where they have been trimmed up.
6. How was the new doorpanel mounted to the door?
7. How wast the armrest bolted to the doorpanel, were new holes drilled, or a custom bracket fabricated?
Sorry about all the q's, but I have been very interested in the this swap for a long time. Thanks!

ok no one tells the guys with the 55 chevys that are running an LT1 to go and buy a 4th gen, no one tells the guys who are running a 34 coupe to go and buy a new car, modified cars are just that, steve never said his car is susposed to look stock, shoot why would he want it to, ITS HIS CAR, and he is MAKING it that way.
ok so if i go and put a corvette interior in my car, should i just go and buy a Ybody, no because that would be ludacris, and i dont have that kind of money. i love thirdgens and as all of the other people that love to modify thirdgens or any kind of car, DO IT AS YOU PLEASE.
shoot when i get the time, i will most likely try something like this also, but till then i would love to see everyone elses photos, and i would love to see a HOW-TO on this,
oh and would you tell LS13rdgen to go and buy a newer 4th gen since he dropped in an LS1 nope you congratulate him on doing a hell of a job on that swap.
thanks.just had to vent, and modifying is what car building and evolving is all about.

How did you do the door panels? Did yo uhave to custom make them, because a 4th gen and a 3rd gen door arent very close in shape, and the door panels are nowhere near the same. Also, dod you have to cut/modify the dash any or is it close to the same size as a third gen dash? I would be very interested in a tech article, hell i might cinsider doing it myself!

nah dont even go there 85 , frist of all i guess you cant read i said anyone who was interested in doing this swap, i didnt say everyone who hates it post you opions, and i dont understand why you feel you had to, i looked at your car, and it looks good, i dont like the eagle on the hood, but thats my opion, im not going to down it becuase of that,, in short i have every orginal nut and bolt that came off my car and in a day it could be orginal again,if i wanted, but regardless of what anyone says, i like it and thats all that matters, i could be very expressive about my opions on your car, but i choose not to , instead i just say nice rims,
LOL all i have to say is dont be so insecure about things 85 T/A.....oh yeah and nice rims....that fourth gen interior kicks third gen interiors *** and yes it is still a third gen car not a fourth gen car. Kind of like a hybrid deal you know

ok sorry about that guys ,now to the guestions i will try to answer them best i can,
1,Q-how hard was it to remove the original dash, and what needed to be removed during the process?
A-well its kinda a pain, if anyone has ever replaced there heater core then know, i removed the heater box/blower box, basically there are just a few screw and bolts holding your orginal dash up ,
2,Q-was the lenght of the new dash very close to the length of the orig, and was there any cuting invloved ?
A-the lengh of dashes were indentical from what i saw i nerver really got the ruler out, thats because i went right into place, the only cutting i had to do to the new dash was there are some metel brakects in the back near the guages that had to be taking out, and of coarse i cut the airbag tube out,
3,Q-what type of dye (brand, place of purchase) was used to color the dash, how long has it been on there, and how is it holding up ?
A-dupli color(wolly world )wallmart , the dye is pretty good stuff, its about 4 bucks a can, it does real good on dashes and soft material, but on the harder plastics, if you dont wipe it down good and get all the dirt off, then i doesnt do to good, most body shops prefer real dye, thats sprayed on with a air gun but primed frist, , the dye has bee on there for about 3 months, but ive used it before and it last if done right,
4,Q- did the orig, steering column match up to the location in the new dash,
A- yep pretty much right on the money, but i do have tilt steering to, so that helps,
5,Q- do you have any closeup shots of the doorpanels? i would like to see where they have been trimmed up,
A-well yes i do, just need to find time to make a small website, posting the pics, for all you guys who wanted a how to do, well i didnt take pics of every step due to time issues, but i have a good memory if that helps, the only place on the new door panels that need to be trimmed was at the top left corners right above the door handle, and on the back of the door panles the plastic hangers i trimmed off to make the door panel fit flush to the door itself then drilled new holes and screw the new door panel on, that might not the right way to do it , but only ideal that came to me at the time, but i can tell you the door panel isnt comming off, pretty strong,
6,Q-how was the new doorpanel mounted to the door?
A-kinda of answerd that in the topic above , i used little screws and the smallest drill bit i had,
7,Q-how was the armrest bolted to the doorpanel, were new holes drilled,or a custom bracket fabricated?
A-well so far i havent need to drill a hole for the armrest the doorpanel is pretty secure as is, but i can allways go back and drill a hole pretty easy for the armrest, plenty of meatal in the door for it, no custom brackets , nothing like that,
if anyone has anymore guestion let me know, i hoped this helped, like i said this is not a 100% precent swap, i using as much as the original stuff as possible, to do a 100% swap is way over my head, due to the wireing, thats the biggest problem, and the only reason i tried it was i got the 4th gen firehawk stuff pretty cheap, and i wanted something different of coarse, later guys

72 I could not agree with you more and that's why I retracted my initial post that contained unwarranted and unjust criticism. The retraction also contained an apology but it seems it is not accepted at this time.
Please note the reply to your original post was deleted by me, but its still in Steve’s personal attack so until he withdraws his post, I guess I’m just stuck with it
I also deleted a 2nd post making light of Steve’s project car in retaliation for his lashing because it contained inappropriate references to his sexuality and his propensity towards substance abuse. It also contained a suggestion about his car to the effect of it reminded me of a “Mighty Morphing Pig-nosed Power Poncho” and that he was also a tweaker.
I also suggested that he might install crack pipe holders and dual chrome dipsticks. Those
comments although justly warranted were also rescinded.
I was somewhat amused that the owner of the so called “Tweak Am Temple” would consider an un-restored and showroom perfect 85 T/A as sub-standard. His slam against 305 automatics was just as engrossing as this motor is used in the vast majority of readers here.
Anyway 72 please accept my apology and I hope this uncalled-for interruption to your services here will be forgotten soon.
Regards,
Don

This was done on a firebird correct?
Does anyone know if the firebird (or transam) interior will fit in a 91-92 camaro?
Or how about a 4th gen camaro interior bolting in a 3rd gen with as little problems as his.

Yea, this is a TA to TA swap. Sounds like I am planning on doing the same thing you are, a TA interior into a Thirdgen camaro. I think the TA interior is much nicer than the Camaro. I spoke with a guy at Speedautomotive, and I believe he told me that both cars had the exact same mounting points for the interior stuff (dash, console, etc). As soon as my engine is ready, I'm going to buy a $500 beater and park my Camaro, and hopefully do this swap. Let everyone know howw your swap goes.
