How do you remove the grid, if it isn't peeling loose already?

I don't want to remove 100% of the grid, but just a small portion. It's not the simple "decal" type I thought it would be inside, but rather a 1/8" thick, solid black grid "glued" to the lens.

How do I get it loose?

i have no idea what the inside of bird tail lights are like but it sounds to me like you can cut out the pieces you want to remove and maybe hook it out with a knife or small screwdriver then clean it up with some goo gone or something. just a shot in the dark lol

Re: GTA taillight laminates
Here it is....The outer clear is actually a separate piece from the grid. There is a trace of some kind of glue residue surrounding the black strips.

I'm afraid to use any kind of blade or anything to pry them up, for fear of scratching up the inside of the clear lens.

yikes i was thinking that it was some sort of decal type materiel but that looks like plastic depending on the type of glue used maybe a heat gun will work ive heard of people using heat guns to separate headlights on s10 pickups to remove the amber corners

Stephen I have already tried this.I honestly don't believe there is a way to get those 2 parts seperated.I think they were fused together in the manufacturing process(coming out of the mold/oven)if you will.
If you find a way to do this please let me know.
That could be a very good taillight resto business! as I see hundreds of diff. cars with the same delam. problem.

just think of all the 91-92 ta/gta tails noone wants because of this.

Re: GTA taillight laminates
FYRECHKN did his custom grids, by using a heat gun to separate the black grid from the clear lens. It was already pretty badly delaminated, so he didn't ruin anything. I'm just real hesitant to "destroy" a perfect set of lights, that have NO delamination on them.

If it was just a decal type grid, thats pretty easily fixable later. But being hard plastic......I don't really want to cut the hard plastic.

The clear clear is obviously a separate piece from the grid & they are just "glued" together.

Basically...I'm needing brighter Reverse lights. I guess instead of removing lack material in the way, I'll search for a brighter light bulb solutio.

Re: GTA taillight laminates
If brighter bulbs doesn't do the trick, I have a spare set of factory fog lights, I can put in the rear bumper cover.

The first pic is basically what I was aiming for, by removing the black grid inside the lights.

Here's my Photoshopped ideas of doing that....

Re: GTA taillight laminates
You could always use a cutting wheel on your dremel and carefully cut the ends of the "bars" in the rev. light section loose. Then use a heat gun on the inside to warm the glue between the black and clear. Once the glue is warmed, grab the bars with needle nose pliers and pull them out. You can also pry them out with a small flat head screwdriver. If you scratch the inside of the lens you could always sand it with high grit paper and buff it out.

Now that I think about it, you're going to have to wet sand and buff where you took the inner black plastic out anyway. If not, you'll still have the imprints of the grid bars.

This is what the clear looks like after the grid is removed:
