i have one in my 89 in the hatch.

 

"Method86SC", your lite probably looks like this. If it is top mounted on the glass it is a "86 hatch and maybe a early '87. After that they went in the inside of the glass(91-92) or in the spoiler(87-90).

Not quite true. All '86 Camaros came with them, as did early '87 Camaros without a spoiler. A little into the '87 model year Chevrolet made the rear spoiler standard on the sport coupe (probably when they ran out of high mount light parts on the assembly line).

No, but I have an '83 TA with a 3rd brake light on the top of the hatch. But then again, the hatch isnt original. The last owner of my car completely modded the exterior of my '83 so that it now looks like an '86. My car looks like an '86 TA, besides the GTA rims and the power bulge hood. It has the black rubber wrap around aero spoiler and the top mounted 3rd brake light(which doesnt work). By the way...how would I get this light to work? I would like it if it actually was functional, otherwise I am thinking about getting another hatch w/o it. I am looking for a hatch with the '91-'92 style spoiler. Or at least one with a decent spoiler that isnt cracked(which is hard to find).

 

It's not rare on an 87. As was mentioned, it was only on the 87's that came without a rear spoiler. Those would be the base models only as the IROC and the Z28 came standard with spoilers.
