Paint $$$$$ is it worth it?
Paint $$$$$ is it worth it?
i dont really know where i should post this but hopefully i can get some input here, i have an 84 ta with the 305 LG4 engine,it smokes cause of valve seals and it has some rust on it, i am looking into getting it painted and this guy i know who paints cars and has a shop and everything said he would paint my car for me, this was his offer, he would replace my door bushings and adjust my doors (they are draging) adujust my hood ( headlights get cought on it on way up) replace my valve seals and give my car a showroom paint job, 3 coats of jet black dupont paint and 3 clearcoats. he said he will sand the whole thing off and paint the entire car, inside the doors and everywhere, taking the fenders panels doors and everything.he wantss 1,500 to do these thing, and said less if i helped him some,is it worth it? i have seen his work and it is very good, he has also painted my truck and it looked great should i do it? please give me some advice.

$1500 sounds waaaaaaaaay too low. If you have prior experience with him then you might as well do it but if I just heard this in a conversation somewhere I would be very skeptical.

I painted the truck (kind of a favor thing too,,) for my buds uncle for $750
If you've seen the work & know the guy, it's a good deal, if you're allowed to work w/him,, it's a learning experience and you'll know what steps he's taking to make sure it's a good job (,, you'll be able to nag as the car is prepped). Black (aside from white) is the cheapest color (price) you can get and it doesn't take alot.

Back in the late 80's I had an 84 Firebird painted in Soulbounder's hometown of Lafayette at Les Melancon's Auto Body. There was some body damage, however, and the bill was over $2000. But, the work was excellent, a real show quality paint job. So, if you like the guy's work, it sounds like a good deal.

The paint job you described would typically be $2500.00 to $4000.00 on a "retail" basis with the chemicals and supplies alone costing $500.00 to $800.00....
....sounds like someone is doing you a BIG favor.
PS.... anything more than 2 coats of basecoat color is a waste of material.
