Ok I have a 1986 Camaro Sport Coupe and i'm painting the engine compartment black so i don't have many tools, so I am going to clean it with degreaser and then paint, tell me if this is a bad idea.

 

clean it, scrub it with a red brillo pad (or 400 grit sand paper) then clean and paint)

 

many ways to prep for paint , all have merits . but , why all black ? what color is it now ? how easy is it to see things you want to work on ? an all black eng. comp. would be like trying to work in a black hole in space . spend your time & money on other things . when you pull the eng. to rebuild/improve it then is the time to re-paint . right now just touch-up & clean-up . just my thoughts , 2 of my camaros were white , 1 was black . good luck .

 

The original color was blue, i'm painting it black, and i can't seem to get behind the windshield wiper motor and the brake booster, any suggestions about getting there without taking them off?
