what size wheel for 255 tires?

I am looking to put on some 17" wheels this summer and I found out that 255/45/17 was the closest to my current tire size 215/65/15. I want to get ROH RT's but they only come in 17x8 or 17x9. which one will work best? the 9 inchers also cost like $25 more.

The 9 inchers will look killer man, I´ve seen 17 x 8, they look good and the tires for them are cheaper but the price diff. is only 25 bucks right? so go for 9. I´ve been told that with the 17 x 9 ROH wheels you dont need spacers and will have no bigger problem with rubbing than we that use 16 x 8.

I have 255/50/16s on my 85-87 IROC rims and they fit just fine.

if your going with 9 inch wheels, get 275 or 285/40/17. ive got 285/40/17 on all four corners on the 88 vette with the stock 17x9 wheels.

Get the 9" rim. Cause if you get the 8" then the tire will bulge over the side and look very ugly. But with the 9" it whould look very nice.

I run tires right in the middle of the wheel's range (215) for the 16x8 IROC's on my car... I wouldn't put more than a 235 on an 8" wheel.. you get better versatility with the 9 inchers so that's what I would recommend... plus, what is 25 bucks when you're paying 1000 plus for a set?

A 245/50-R16 is the ideal tire size for a 16x8 rim. A 255 is quite a bit taller and only marginally wider and gives up a good amount of cornering potential. If you get the 17-inch rims then absolutely beyond any question get at least 9-inch wide. Preferably 9.5-inch wide. Your options for different tires will open up and give you much more flexibility. Plus the commonality of the 275/40-R17 lowers the cost of the tires thus offsetting the price difference of the wheels. The ideal rim size for a 275/40-R17 is 9.5-inch wide. A 9-inch is at the lower limit of acceptable rim size and will give up cornering performance to the 9.5 rim. A 285 is simply too large for a 9-inch rim and is NOT optimum.
