What grit sandpaper do I use before putting paint on?
I'm paint my car with some black DuPont enamel paint I bought. I'm going to paint this over the old paint job. In other words, I'm not taking the body down to the metal and putting primer on it, etc.
I was planning on using 600 grit sandpaper to
rough up the old paint job and make it porous enought to accept the new paint.
After I paint on the enamel, I wetsand it with 2500, right? This is on a $300 beater so I just want it to look "okay."
Thanks,
Rob

4oo grit should be good enough and cut quicker then 6oo. Enamel doesn't color sand & buff like laquer or urethane unless you put some sort of 'wet look' hardener in it & then still,, it will have a slight haze after buffing.
