Polishing IROC wheels

hey ive read all of the threads on refinishibng the iroc wheels but i was wondering.... I have been sanding by hand till my hands fall off but they still look like monkey feces..... anyone know if I can use ....say a palm sander or perhaps a grinder with the proper abrasive pads to make it go quicker?..... dont really like the idea of the dremel b/c of the small surface it can work at a time.... just seems like i would get a more uniform finish with a sander or grinder.... has anyone used one of these on the wheels... and maybe a cpl pics of the results..... THANX!!!

Re: Polishing IROC wheels

I don't know what your reading, but if your hands are falling off,..it sounds like you're sanding more than you need to. Purpose of sanding is really to bring out a layer of fresh aluminum. It should look very bright but not reflective. 400 grit is the highest I went. Dry first and then wet. Going with a higher grit paper will make the scratches go awayand make it glass smooth, but will continually dull the luster. Use compounds after the 400 of decreasing grit and finer polishing buffs until you can shave in the wheels.
Incredibly long process it is, but well worth it. Good luck, and thanks for the laugh with the monkey feces comment

Re: Polishing IROC wheels

I polished my '86 wheels and they look like mirrors now.....what I did....started with 400 grit, then 800 grit, then 1500 grit.....sanded till my hands fell off too (8 hours per wheel), I sanded till all the machined ribs were gone, then I took a high speed polishing wheel, some mothers aluminum polished, and shined them out (spent about 1 hour per wheel buffing)....they look GREAT!!

This works great and you can use a drill just watch the chuck don't let it hit the wheel. Or you can buy a buffing motor/grinder.
