My $0.02 on this is, if GM is going to kill a midlevel sports car, it might as well be the Monte Carlo. I mean if you want to talk about lack in sales and performance and all that. I think the camaro will live.
Like some have posted already, either its a marketing strategy by saying its gonna be killed or they are coming out with something new and its gonna come out with a bang.
Think about it, if GM is worried about the Fbodies not selling then they should really take a look at the Monte's. Not to knock the Monte's or anything, but GM has really insulted that name by what they have in production now. And it is fact that the Fbodies are outselling the Monte's. So why is GM gonnna continue building Monte's thats not selling as much as the Fbodies. Production costs? I dont think so. In fact, the cost of a Monte is more than a Z28. A 2001 Base model Monte SS (3.8L V6) is $23,500. A base model Z28 (5.7L V8) costs $22,900 (as priced in the Kelly Blue Book. Now come on, if GM is gonna kill the Fbodies based on sales figures, then they should really consider killing the Monte, not to mention the new Impalas. (Don't get me started on that too.) Not that I have anything against the new Impalas, but what an insult it is to the name.
GM really needs to get their act together. So hopefully all this talk about killing the Fbodies is only talk, to get sales up or to come out with something better. Just my opinion.

Monte Carlo is actually doingreally good in sales. My dealer told me this the other day. Seeing high sales lately. Those small s10 trucks the Xtreme ones are high sellers among teens and young people cuase they look cool and are popular from the nscar truck series.

because it would not require side bags .
In order for a car to be built, the manufacturer has to put out a call for bids on the parts that are going into the vehicle. The lead time varies, but in my experience is usually around 2 years. At this time there have been no calls for new Camaro or Firebird parts that I am aware of. I'm not in the parts manufacturing loop, but do try to keep up with certain things as much as I can.

Law does not pertain to mid 80's and below.

Good god with the air bags! I mean is it just me or are airbags seeming more of a danger than a help? True, they can help in some wrecks, but a huge inflated piece of rough fibers flying at my face and sides at a good high mph doesn't excite me... that and I really think it is almost impossible to kill the camaro.. look at how many people love it! sure, the dumba**es go for the 'stangs, but they will recognize in a good year (if even that long) when their POS ford breaks down that they should go chevy anyways, right???

the biggest knock against the monte SS is that since '95 when the monte came back w/ a dohc 3.4 Z34 it hasn't gotten any better nor any faster. by '97 it had the (-15 ponies from the 3.4) 3.8. it still has the same motor with a so called 5 hp increase. still 10 behind the early nineties. and don't forget that the butt-end is ugly. the GP is the only car in that segment worth looking @. it's got 40 horses on the rest. w/ the supercharger, it still hasn't had any power increases since '97 when the new body debuted. the only changes the gp has had has been wheels. and go figure it's the most powerful car in it's segment, and thus it's the only one with ANY aftermarket support.

Guys, anyone who's a NASCAR car fan knows the answer to the Monte rebirth question. Chevy needed a car with specs that would qualify for stock car competition. Jeff Gordon's ride is a Monte. The old ride was no good anymore. I saw an SS the other day. Just plain Nasty! All white with doofy looking red and black lettering. It was so bland. They do sell well, though.
As far as sales go, Chevy shot themselves in the foot early on. Too many choices. Ford basically only had the Mustang and T-Bird. Now they both have a huge loyal following. Chevy had the Vette and Camaro and then threw in something else every so often (i.e. Malibu, Monte etc). Then GM threw out others and split their base too thin. Look how well the Impala SS did when they first brought it back. Now look at it! You let people down too many times they just don't come around anymore.
On a side note, my Dad has the T-Bird due to be delivered in October. It really is a sweet ride. If Ford puts that Forty-nine into production and Chevy drops the Camaro they are in big trouble.

Alright guys I work in the Oshawa GM car plant. I work in the body shop building Implala's and Monte's engine compartments. Next year they are bringing out a completly new supercharger setup for the Monte SS, one which is MORE powerful than the ones used in the Bonneville SSEi and the Grand Prix GTP.
How do I know this? At the Frame Rail station that I work at, they installed an overhead hoist to lift the heavier, reinforced Frame Rails for the upcoming supercharged Monte SS's next year. My foreman has also confirmed that next year's Monte SS will have the new supercharger.
Also in the works is a Impala SS Low-Rider Edition that will follow the theme of low-rider Impala's of the 60's.
Oshawa car plant builds the Monte's, Impala's, Regal's, Century's, and next year the new re-designed Grand Prix, which most guys who have seen the new Grand Prix at work tell me that it's not that great looking. It's supposed to be more narrow and a shorter wheel base.

Here is what i think and what i have red in Autoweek and Automobile magizines. "the camaro nameplate is scheduled for a 2005 ressurection on what industry buzz calls this millenniums 69 camaro" Camaros will be produced again. Firebirds i havent heard anything about them.
I'll tell you why there cancelling them- too freakin' expensive! $32,000 for a Ram Air T/A?! I'm looking at last year's BMW's at that level. I'm a 22-year-old guy who can't afford $600 car payments. Why does rice sell? It's cheap, and it modifies cheap. You put a new Z28 at a sub-$20,000 figure, and I'm interested.
They'll come back in a few years as FWD 2-seat roadsters and here's why- cheaper to make/ sell, more popular design with the more lucrative rice crowd, roadster also a hot segment (miata, S2000). It's all about $$$. And quite honestly, I'm a huge f-body fan, but the current ones are just not worth the price of admition.
I'll stick to modifying my 89 Formula for better performance than a brand new f-body for an fraction of the price. And when the time comes, I'm looking at a used C5 for $32,000.
