There's a few chops around, and a Camaro with black construction paper taped all over the roof to see what it would look like. I was going to do it to my car a while back but decided against it...glad I did.

Not my car. Not the best picture, but it should give you an idea of what it looks like.

Maybe blacking out the wing would be too much? Or keep the "top half black" theme going?

I think it would look really good with super dark tint.

I have my car painted that way. Hood is black roof is black and so is deck lid. I will post some pics. I really like the way it turned out. I think the lines I used make it look awesome.

Re: Pic of 3rd gen with roof painted black?
I was going for that look with my Camaro, before i took her off the road. I had blackout tails, a black hood, the black t-tops and i was going to get some dark tint and paint the top black, It looked good coming along with the maui blue. I like it in the red also, and that bird is pretty sweet. I dont think on our cars just blacking out the roof is enough though as we dont have a clear defined line. if you want just a feel for how it looks, then go look at 240sx's 89-93. They like to black out the roof and it looks pretty good with the only difference being a clearly defined line on the b-pillar.

Re: Pics of 89GTA with roof painted black!!
Thanks. I painted it myself in the front yard. Has lots of orange peel but doesn't look to bad. I am going to get a full repaint coming this summer. I am going to keep the same lines too.
The painter wants to pull the black down the car farther but I like the way it is. I have it coming off the door then slowly tapering back so that when you get to the back of the deck lid there is all white and the black disappears into the decklid gap. I will try and get a pic of it and post it. To me it makes the back end look like it sticks out further kind of like a vette.

bigjay89gta,
your car looks amazing! I think the only thing I would do differently is the hood, I would do the hood 2 tone, to me it looks like you just put a different hood on it. I think if you continued the white onto the hood, (following the body lines on the hood), it would look a little better, but either way, AWESOME car!

I had it in black primer that way and it looked good, but I had to paint the hood too because the paint was peeling so I did black all the way and I like it. It looked good like you said, but I love the way it looks now.

Re: Pics of 89GTA with roof painted black!!
What exactly do you want a pic of. Right now it is up on Jackstands while I redo the front steering stuff, and accessories.
FryChicken my painter wants to do that too, but I am going to probably stay with the lines I currently have. I really wanted to do some blue tribal but I dont think it will look to good.
Yeah my colors under the hood are polished aluminum, blue and black, same with suspension and brake stuff. Love the blue with black and shiny metal.

Really old pic and crappy cell phone pic but heres mine when i was doing bodywork getting ready for paint. I was thinking about painting it this way and used black primer to see what it would look like.

Re: Pic of 3rd gen with roof painted black?
just a side note. 2nd gen Birds had a rare option called a canopy paint option. the black went from the back of the doors forward to the A pillars. body color was continued on top behind the window, it look almost like a targa top. I took this picture the day I bought my '76. I wonder what this would look like on a third gen?

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but the prototype ASC Camaro convertible that was a joint effort between Chevrolet and ASC had a black A-pillar/windshield surround. I thought it looked pretty good.
I also suspect the 1984 Trans Am White/blue striped Anniversary edition prototype may have had the black windshield surround. See attachment.

Re: Pic of 3rd gen with roof painted black?
As I did more research, it turns out that you are correct. Beginning in 1976 and ending in 1979, GM offered RPO CB7 which was a front-half vinyl roof available throughout the Firebird line, in white, black, buckskin, mahogany, Firethorn, blue and silver. (Pg 88, Firebird illustrated buyers guide, John A Gunnell)
apparently, My car had the vinyl removed and the roof painted black..
One car did receive a black painted roof and pillar option and that was the 1980 Trans Am Indy Pace car

Re: Pic of 3rd gen with roof painted black?
I plan to do my cowl hood and pillars black when I repaint the rest of the car.
I had to put my deck lid and Tonneau cover from my old black vert on this car. So soon as I finish off the 92 Z wing. Im doing the deck lid, side caps, tonneau cover, pillars and hood black.
