Interior Restoration Teaser Pics
Just thought I would show everyone a few snapshots from my current project: Interior restoration.
Center console about 75% finished with fresh paint and carpet, custom restored handle/lock panels, and arm rests. The one on the top is the original (passengers side) one, but the one on the bottom is It's driver side twin with fresh VHT vinyl dye.
For the console, I hit the entire thing with Krylon fusion satin black. I did the lower console too, about a week before I decided to carpet it LOL! For the upper console, I'm putting in fresh hatch/window switches with visible graphics and metallic red trim. The blank area below the switches where the rare console clock can be found, I cut out an 80mm hole. I'm going to install a high CFM red LED fan here with a chrome grill for some blingage, but it will be functional. It's function will be for one of two things:
Currently, I'm looking into the option of refrigerating the console glovebox. If I don't take that route, the fan will provide fresh airflow inside of the console for the head unit. The ashtray (not pictured) had been sprayed with VHT gloss rollbar paint and has a hidden killswitch installed in the form of a high security radial lock. As for the glovebox lid, no matter what approach you take the stupid vinyl ALWAYS wears out and cracks. So I ripped that crap off and carpeted the lid.
As far as the handle trim panels, I also sprayed those with krylon fusion, painted the fake (as well as the real) torx screws with red brake caliper paint (I know it will never hit 900F but the color matched well), and installed new lock switches with fresh graphics and painted over them with Clear acrylic paint to preserve the switch graphics. I took this same approach with the window/trunk hatch switches.
I'm getting ready to put the doors back together in a few weeks. Things I've done so far:
- Replaced both window motors
- greased lock actuators and replaced failed rivets on drivers lock actuator which caused the door to not lock unless manually operated.
- Adjusted window guides
- Removed door handles and sprayed them with satin black VHT rollbar paint. (Can you imagine the look on my passengers face when I told them to, "Slide that rod forward", to open the door
)
Things left to do to doors:
- Remove regulator tracks and clean/lubricate since passenger window is STILL creeping.
- Adjust window stops
- Replace outer drivers window sweep
- Use POR-15 Silver in the bottoms of both doors. The passengers door just has a few dime sized rust areas, but the bottom of the drivers door is rotted to hell due to offending window sweep allowing water inside the door. These materials are on the way and should be finished in a little over a week (work sucks sometimes).
- Put doors back together!
More progress to come. Hope you all enjoy!

You know to be honest, I thought the same thing. After I first painted them I thought, "Oh crap what did I do now I have to STRIP the panels and start over to get rid of this tonka truck red". The more you stare at it though, the more it grows on you and begins to look mean against the black. I think the key is keeping it subtle. Small red accents here and there.

I have to agree on the red painted torx screws--they just look cheesy. I think the way to fix it might be if you could locate some red aluminum ones...Personally I would just leave them black and move on.
