68 firebird tail lights

has anyone ever put a set of 68 firebird tail lights in their third gen?

i know there not gonna just bolt in. if i do it i'll make brackets to hold them in place and make a fiberglass filler panel to surround them. so what you guys think would it look good? can someone try Photoshopping this?

Re: 68 firebird tail lights

it won't look good and is something that should stay on a 1st gen.
you're going to have a lot of unused space because the 3rd gen taillights are much larger.
although the marker lights shouldn't be an issue.

whats wrong with having open space the 1st gens have open space and look good. as long as its finished and i make a fiberglass cover for the area between and around them. it should look alright.

because the tail panels are completely different. one is flat and one is concave.

i'm not sure which one your saying is flat but when i make a fiberglass fill panel it will be shaped like the 68 tail panel and flow into the side pieces of the spoiler. infact i mite make the spoiler side pieces and this panel 1 piece.

Re: 68 firebird tail lights

have you ever seen a thirdgen without the taillights in?
the tail panel goes IN. which means it will look STUPID if this were to work. they won't even work actually.
Look at the 1st gen taillights. they go behind the tail-panel while the 3rd gens go in front of it. You would have to make cuts for that, and then have a lot of empty space. in fact, it would look like a 70s car with the bumpers that stuck out too much.
just look at one without the taillights in and try to picture this working...

Id say no different then the early round Vette taillights on the rear of a 2nd gen.

yes i have had my lights out before but you wont see that tho!
i think i have said this in every post so far i plan to make a fiberglass cover of that area of my firebird so its flat like the 68 and recess the 68 light into the fiberglass cover. so the whole tail light are will look like a 68. and when i make the spoiler i will glass its side pieces rite into that filler panel.

Gumby i love your hood how did you do that?
also did you ever finish the sail panel vents?

Just bought some metal open 68 vents and started cutting.
Kinda like the sail panels, eyeballed and just started cutting and went with it.

The key placement was at the hood apex, sittin inside the car, the point where the hood line drops out of sight, so the scoops face forward.

The vents are done, both are in.

Re: 68 firebird tail lights

I like the idea but why dont you take a step further, make the piece but insted of using real 68 lights get led lights and put them in a way that they will look like the 68 but with better lighting. truck led lights come in rectangular chapes they are not expensive and that would killer, just my

Re: 68 firebird tail lights

I almost wonder if you could just cut down a set of stock lights to make it easy, they already fill the area well. Just cut the outter lense part off, for lighting id redo the 68 lense in LED's

Re: 68 firebird tail lights

The Arrowhead side marker lights are easy to get (repops), but aren't cheap. I was going to, until I priced them. Not REAL expensive, just higher tan my budget allowed. Sorry. Looked trough my Book marks & can't find the web page for them.

Get me a pic of your car, matching the angle of the pics of the 1st gen above & I'll Photoshop it in for ya.

Gumby....Got any more pics of your scoops, from different angles?

Re: 68 firebird tail lights

someone i knew did the side marker lights but with the bird that was used on a different model or something, as far as taillights go u could use the pattern of the 1st gens and tape them out and paint them black or body color to look older while using the third gen ones, just a thought

i dont got a camera but i got 2 pics that are the same angle the thirdgen is harwood's car i plan on making a bumper that looks like that one but that only sticks out 1 or 2 inches. so stephen when you photoshop the lights can you also photoshop the bumper so it don't stick out much. thanx

Re: 68 firebird tail lights

thanx oscars i like the idea of customizing the stock light to like like that. but that would be as hard if not hard than bolting in a set of 68 lights and glassing around them. also this way includes chrome trim.

the marker lights are roughly 50 dollars on ebay with the chrome.

I'll give it a shot, but you talking about 1 taken from 3 ft off the ground & the other appears to be 10ft of the ground. I'll try to adjust the angle & get it as best I can.

I tried this earlier with my car......

thanx for posting that.

that car is amazing. the rear quarters are flared out a bit much and the spoiler is ridiculously large but other wise awesome. and those tail lights look incredible. i am definitely going to do this. i am going to order some fiberglass in a couple of weeks. and make a 5 inch duck tail spoiler and cover for that area.

eventually id like to get a set of led tail lights. but that will be while. that does look like a quality kit. for now i'll get the old ones in and working.

Yes I remember that T.A. From 2 years ago at the Performance World Car Show when I had my car there, I have a pic or 2 of it and the 1st gen. Firebird lights look cool on there...I completely forgot about that!

Everything but the tail lights looks like something you would find in the wild HW collection. So you already got a set of 68 lights?

Since they only shine out and are flat by design, I almost bet you could build them if you found a plastic supplier, sure you can find that stuff in sheets.

Re: 68 firebird tail lights

im almost always looking at wierd wide body kits. dunno why it just sparks my imagination, as to that 84, it couldve been done a lot better, but i think that the rear end looks more shaved than a stock third gen one which is really cool, anyways im glad i could help

Remember yours will look a little different compared to that T.A. yours will look a little closer towards the middle because you don't have that wide body kit on there...it will look much better!

thanx for the comments. money is going to be be a little tight for a couple of weeks cuz i got to get another vehicle before my transmission completely quits. its an automatic but i have to manually shift it. after that i will get the stuff needed to do this and i will either post the build here or a link to a new thread.
