Under Hood Material
Attached directly under my hood there is a: carpet? cloth? I don't know. Anyway, it's coming off and dont really know what to do about it. Is there any thing as far as replaceing it? Getting something else to bolt in its place, or just take it off, and leave it off? It's kinda hard to say what it is, its just hanging from my hood.

You can get a brand new insulator from a GM dealership for about $35 dollars. It makes a world of difference in the appearance of the car under the hood.
You could also just remove it entirely if you wanted to. Some people say it lets the hood get too hot and that's bad for the paint, or lets too much noise out. I have one car that I replaced it in, and one that I just removed and left out, and both work fine and look better than a ratty messed up one.

the only reason people say it's bad for the paint is because the engines heat heats up the hood wich can cause the paint to bubble up and chip, but the thing is if the car is sitting all day long in the hot arizona sun "like mine sometimes" the hood will get a hell of alote hotter than the engine, so i dont think it would harm tha paint, but i like the insulator because it keeps the noise down

Different Insulator
Does anyone know of a company that makes a black, rubberized underhood insulator? I saw one at a ca show and now I want one...

The HVAC industry uses a material called sound liner. It is made out of the same stuff. The only draw back is it comes in 50 and 100 foot rolls. If you go to a local installer they may sell you a chunk. It is really nice and tough material, black in color with a smooth finish and won't fray like that stock crap.

Well I took mine off because it was looking really bad.. I wondered about the heat too.. but being my car is black.. I think the sun heats up the surface way more than the engine does.. so far this summer no notacible problems.. another friend has a white one and he has no problems either

I had mine off for a while and the hood started to show heat damage so i went and got a dynomat liner from summit. That thing kicks a$$!! I went on a three hour trip and the hood was still cold that and you can't even hear the engine running.

Here's my 2 cents worth ..... keep the change.
Working in a body shop I have seen first hand evidence of "no hood liner" damage. I am sure it would be on a "car by car" basis as to whether it would damage your paint job without one...... BUT it can happen.
The car does run quieter with one.
In the winter you get a slightly reduced warm up time from keeping the heat in vs. outside ambient temp. (Maybe too small to make a ratzass.
In the summer (Arizona) your hood could be 200°. Now this liner does just as much to keep the outside temp out of your engine bay which is producing enough heat on it's own.
87Camaro, you know as well as I, I have NEVER seen as many clear coat fades as in Arizona, especially silver and red shades.
There is an old wives tale that may be true that the plastic pins were designed to melt and drop the blanket on an engine fire. I'm thinking that this might be late BUT if I had a fire and no extinguisher I would want that thing to come loose so I could use it to try and put out a fire.
I would reinstall a new one. The new ones are not as knarly as the old roof insulation looking ones and actually look good.

i would like to have an open element so you could hear the throaty roar of the engine breathing, you get that effect better when there is no underhood liner, but like my paint too. do a search there was a discussion on the sound thing a few weeks ago...

My hood insulation was all chewed up (the car used to be stored in a barn; mice apparently like to eat insulation...) so I replaced it for about $30... I think it looks better than no insulation and it really makes your engine compartment look nice if you haven't replaced it yet.
