Do Any of You Find This Odd?
My car has been in two documented accidents. The first one I confirmed by a PO was a very minor sideswipe and just left a dent in the passenger fender. The second accident was unfortunately by my hand. Needs some new front end pieces but nothing catastrophical.
However, I find it a tad bit odd that not only was the whole car done up in a cheap maaco paint job, but if you look at the rear bumper on the bottom edge of the GFX and in the corners of the bumper itself where the paint has flaked/scraped off it is burgundy underneath. Almost as if the bumper used to be a different color. Makes me think my car was once rear ended and repaired off the books.

The entire car could have been a different color, and they just painted over it. Guess you'd have to see whats under the current paint in other places on the body to tell for sure. I noticed my passenger door is green on the inside under the panel but its red on the outside, yet the PO said it didn't get hit on that side. It's always hard to tell the true story on cars unless you can talk to everyone.

Re: Do Any of You Find This Odd?
I'm not making much sense of this reply. What I was getting at is that while the cheap maaco job is chipping/peeling all over and exposing gray primer/bare metal underneath, The bumper shows burgundy paint.
To throw another wrench in the gears, white with gold trim was the car's factory color scheme.
I also noticed that my driver door is bare metal on the inside, but the inside of the pass door has been coating with what looks like undercoating :S

You all keep putting words into my mouth. The car looks and drives fine so no one is loosing sleep.
I just wanted a second opinion on what I think might have happened since cars can't talk. Nothing more, nothing less.

Re: Do Any of You Find This Odd?
Someone tapped it in the rear, it messed up the bumper cover, it was replaced with a different one from the junk yard. Who knows what happened, you'll never know, so we can come up with a million things that could of happened to it.
You asked if it was odd, I didn't find it odd at all since the car is ~25 years old. Lots of things can happen in 25 years. If you bought the car off the lot new yesterday then I would say it's odd.

Odd as in not matching the rest of the car. This is starting to get really nit picky over something VERY simple so let's just settle on, "Not original bumper cover", which was all I was really trying to confirm in the first place.

Re: Do Any of You Find This Odd?
I am the 3rd owner of mine and was lucky enough to talk to both of the previous owners. The guy I bought it from said some old lady backed into it in a parking lot and hit the drivers door but they re-skinned it. The cars original color was white and it was re-painted white a few years before I bought it. When I finally started tearing it down for the restoration, I come to find out that not only was the drivers door replaced with a red junkyard one instead of re-skinning the factory door, but the junkyard door was a POS! It had about an inch of bondo over the outside, and when I sanded it down, it looked like someone beat the door with a baseball bat. I'll tell you what though, I want to know the name of the body shop that did it because they can hide anything!! They did some good work on that door!
Just goes to show though, theres a lot that can happen in a cars lifetime being 25 years old, and what a previous owner or carfax told you ussually isn't the extent of the cars history.

Re: Do Any of You Find This Odd?
I thought it was blatantly obvious from your first post that it wasn't the original bumper...

Re: Do Any of You Find This Odd?
You know, what is it with you people? That is a serious question. I would say with CONFIDENCE that at least HALF of the users on this board are in their teens or twenties, so these kind of small talk, "Hey check this out" posts are to be expected. But I've noticed that people who post anything out of the context of, "How do I properly calibrate the A/F ratio" or "Wiring diagram for flux capacitor", they are 10x more prone to receive a backhanded/smart***** remark, and I really don't appreciate the ridicule.
MAYBE Someone could have gotten on and posted a story about their similar situation. Or MAYBE it could have been some blunder from the factory, as was common with cars from this era.
Gee, I am SO SORRY I felt like socializing with my fellow thirdgen owners.
These are FUN cars, so there is no reason we should have a BORING forum.
