Can you put hids in the bumper turn signal lights?

I have a spare hid kit laying around and was thinking of putting hids in the bumper lights if possible thanks.

Re: Can you put hids in the bumper turn signal lights?

well i wouldn't suggest it because of the fact that HIDs have to warm up before they produce the full amount of light they aren't just like light bulbs that turn on and off the gas in the bulb has to heat to produce the power of light that they produce

Real HID??
IIRC heavier gauge wiring & some type of heavy duty balast // relays are needed for each bulb..??..

Interesting idea!!

Re: Can you put hids in the bumper turn signal lights?

Do HID bulbs generate heat?
How would it affect the plastic housings & lenses?
Do they use stock reflectors?

I know nothing about them other than the wires balast & relays need to be up to the task.

If you are able to do it with great results, this may be something for us to try.
The country roads seem to attract deer & other vermin, as well as different degrees of fog!!

Re: Can you put hids in the bumper turn signal lights?

you'll need to use a retrofit hid bulb that is meant for the socket and bulb type of the original. i dont think the kit you have is going to be correct for the lights you're looking to swap. as for heat, HID's actually burn cooler than standard halogens, so the housing should be ok. HID's are not meant to handle lots of blinking, so I wouldn't use them in any turn signal housings (along with possibly blinding other drivers due to the light pattern).

Even if you can fit them in there, you shouldn't.

HID are not meant to be turned on and off like a blinker.

You will blind other drivers as the reflector is in no way made for a light that bright in there.

Honestly I can't believe anyone encouraged you to do this...

I was just going to modify the back of the housing so the bulb would fit I was going to get different bulbs like the foglights use. The idea was from people having them in their foglights I didnt know if the could take blinking or not, I might try getting some led bulbs or something the kit I have is from vvme they have a one year warranty so if they messed up i could have them replaced as far as blinding people my car is lowered and the 55 watt kits in the headlights are low enough that on coming traffic isnt distracting, so that part would be fine , its just the blinking that concerns me I dont want a fire or anything.

You are still going to blind people and even if the bulbs don't catch the car on fire everyone coming the other way will want to catch it on fire.

I'm planing on using HID's in the turn signal as fog light.
just cut off the back and make two separate areas for the lights, one for turn and one for fog light.

I think this would be the best what would be your plan for wiring or are you just throwing ideas, it's definitely a good one.

Re: Can you put hids in the bumper turn signal lights?

that would be redundant for the fact that if the HIDs are on it would wash out all the light from the blinker bulb

Re: Can you put hids in the bumper turn signal lights?

I'm considering this for a fog light replacement, so I do not have to have them in the typical location, I was had not considered the turn lights not being seen with the HID's on. but just mostly to pass safety inspection, I a bro has a Buick GN with H4 headlight conversions and they would not pass the car.

Why not just swap out the factory bulbs for LEDs? Lots of choices and very cheap.

Sorry if I come off as condescending, but there is a reason why the optics (reflectors or more often projectors) have been specifically designed to handle the type (not just brightness) of light that HID produces. This going for the idea of separating the housing for a fog light/turn signal also.

Cool alternative...switchback leds. bright white when the parking lights are on...alternate orange/white/orange/white when you hit the turn signals.

vleds.com has 2 different types...type 1 which is like those in the video...and type 2....which turns the white bulbs off completely while the orange flashes, and then the white comes back on.

I'm just throwing out my crude idea, I enjoy the input of others,
why should I do something and find out it will not work? when some one else has done it that way and had to change it.

everyone has something to bring to the table on our projects.
