Started as a front marker lamp mod, but upon receiving the LED lights.I knew they'ld be too puny to fill the lense. So i did the side markers instead.
Here's what i ordered (w/1 taken apart).$4.99, all the way from China!
CBs, Fr/Bk.Left-untouched,Right-modified.Red line indicates 2nd cut. Blk line, LEDs relocated & resistors re-positioned (circled).
Using my clear side markers.Test fit to housing/lens. Also shows why i made the 2nd cut.So CB fits w/in the lens. CB fits perfectly between 4 bars on the housing.
Socket fits as before.Plenty of room inside.
Finished....A few other things i did (didnt take pics) i cut the LEDs a bit by filing the tops down.Otherwise the lens wont seal against the housing.Im still modding the front maker lamps.

I have a thought/question about LED's and uses like this...
I like the LED's - but to me, I like the brightness, not necessarily the "22 little bright lights" look if that makes sense. I guess it's just my nature to update my car, but keep the look similar to stock for the era.
So, I was wondering (from someone like yourself that has played with LED's ALOT more than I have)...
Would it be possible to do as you have for instance, but place a thin sheet of something between the LED's and the lense to act as a diffuser of sorts - so that the brightness remains, but the individual pinpoints of light from each LED is diffused more so that the entire surface of the lense is lit without so many 'pinpoints' of light?
Does that even make sense? Like a thin sheet of a cloudy plastic that will diffuse the light but maintain a brighter overall appearance than the single dim incandescent bulb.
makes sense... but you can also order LEDs with a wilder viewing angle (which spreads the light out) or you could even sand the top of each LED to break the beam of light up too
Looking good!! I might ask you to make me a pair of those
Unfortunately, for the amount of hours. There's no money in it...Not enough anyway.

The lense has diffusers already, which spreads the light, but also makes it dim.A second diffuser would make it dimmer.A single (even if its big) LED wouldnt spread the light far enough. My reason for LEDs is lower voltage needs, easier on the alt, less heat/warpage on plastics & longer life Vs bulbs.
You can try all the single LEDs you want or multiple LED types, but none will match a bulb.Ive tried alot (wide angle, inverted,SMT).Anything with 6 or more LEDs on one socket comes pretty close, but will not fit (too long). If you like the OE look...stick with bulbs, til something better comes along. For me this is still an OE lamp, fits/installs as OE & looks stock.Until the lights are on.
Great mod- i wanted to do this with clear lens though, i have seen on the 5th gen camaro a clear smoke style that looked slaming (were i got idea) i think when i do get a chance to try this i like to narrow the side marker a bit.
Nice, I need to brighten up my side markers as I burried them in the top coat / painted over them. You can still see them at night but not as bright as I would of liked, though you can still see the color difference between the lense colors.
Bit of an update: got the led flasher yesterday, but it did not solve the issue. The only part that does not function as normal is the LED side marker will not "blink" unless the driving lights are on.This was the issue w/the OEM flasher as well.Everything else works as it should.
The new flasher does increase the blink rate, which i really like.Unlike the very slow rate of the stock flasher, but you definately dont need the LED unit.To solve the problem though.I rigged up a small relay to the OEM side marker harness. With the LED side marker on the low side of the relay & the harness/batt to the hi-side.This works fine......but,
Problem is now i have 12v on 87 & 87a, this makes the LEDs not blink with the driving lights on (just flickers). So will need a resistor to drop voltage to 6.Here's a schematic i made (w/resistor).
Always love reading your light mod threads haha...
Dont forget about this handy little LED wizard. http://led.linear1.org/led.wiz
So did the LED flasher actually benefit your system then? or would the stocker do the job with the resistor.
BTW Great Job. You have me hooked on lights.
That web address mighta helped.Problem i had finding a resistor was/is not knowing the LED specs. So i wired the resistor to the cars 12v circut, instead of the CB.
Dam I like this and im gonna try it as well over the summer. What would i look up to find them as i looked on ebay with no luck. Are they amber as well to begin with?
For those that may wanna look.I think I typed ”22 led amber strobe light” or something thereabouts.Maybe 6 has a better method, as I dont really remember.
