My LED Tailights (cheap mans way)

Ok, Im too cheap to buy those LED conversions offered here & dont really care for the clear lense either. So this is my answer to LED tailights. So far its just the brake light.Dont know yet if ill bother with the sig & back up.Since they are used for very short instances.Anyway here's the LED fixture in the housing.I may remove the black painted stripe in the center & apply some nightshade in its place.

here it is lit(no brk light or lense)

with lense, brk light off

& with lense, brk light on

my current lamps with bulb

I dont have a pic with my checker board painted lense yet.The T.L used is from a spare set, but it looks just as bright.Especially when the brakes are applied. The LED fixture is 4 inches in dia.I got them on ebay for $33.I'd like to get the amber for the sigs, but i dont see the point since they're used infrequently.Opinions...blast away!

Re: My LED Tailights (cheap mans way)

Am I understanding right?

It achieves more of a BRIGHT circle in the lens, rather than evenly lighting the whole lens, in that area?

Re: My LED Tailights (cheap mans way)

The LED unit is round so the light pattern is round as well.It still illuminates the corners, but the center is much brighter. This what i wanted when i saw a lexus GS(i think thats the name)some years back.Ive been searching for a big enough LED lamp to fill the lamp pocket.I have to see how well this will look in the daylight though.

Re: My LED Tailights (cheap mans way)

That is CORRECT Stephen.

You should look into these bulbs. I own them (Installed in my 300zx, Z31, brake, turn signal, reverse) and they are VERY BRIGHT and will evenly light the lens...

Here ya go, bulbs come from Hong Kong so shipping is something like 2 weeks.

Just tell him thebcrookie sent you...might not matter but I have purchased over $100 in bulbs from him.

Re: My LED Tailights (cheap mans way)

Very interesting idea, I like it.

How well would a plastic light diffuser make the round LED look a little more square?
I'd like to look into that if the round glow could be spread out a little more evenly throughout the tail light.

Re: My LED Tailights (cheap mans way)

Im sure there are square LED fixtures as big as mine.I ddint bother looking though.Since i was dead set on the round in the square look.Hopefully ill get daylight pics soon.I dont know if a diffuser would help much.It would probably not disburse that much light as the LED is about 1/2 in away from the lense.

Re: My LED Tailights (cheap mans way)

These would be great, but are only 1 1/2" square. Need almost 4" square to evenly distribute the light.

I don't like the big "dot" lighting of the ones by the OP. I want an even light.

Re: My LED Tailights (cheap mans way)

You need a bigger "square".I have 2 of those in my yelow bikes tailight(see sig)& also in the dome lense of my camaro.Nowhere near the size, also the LEDs are too small. The LEDs in the round one are twice in diameter.

BTW, doesnt spagetti(or somebody) already make square LEDs!

OK, here's a day pic, just the lights

w/brk lights

I kinda like.I think it'll grow on me.The light is smaller,
but just as bright.Which is a relief.Id still like to center the
LED better in the housing & also remove the black stripe

I don't know about you guys, but, my luck with those square leds was not good. They lit up okay, but good luck getting the metal connector base to lock in the socket. I destroyed mine trying to get the light out of the socket. Just my experience....

Re: My LED Tailights (cheap mans way)

does anyone know where you get the bulbs for the light bar that is in the picture? i have a 90 and i just realized that all 5 of the little suckers are out. do you have a part number or anything like that. they are so small that nothing is written on them.

did a search here but must be using wrong terms - have to buy some.
thanks - tony

just found out its called a high mounted brake light - but not in any book i have.

Nope....194 are the side marker/license plate bulbs. Cheap, unlike the Camaro 3rd brake light bulbs....

891 bulbs are what are used, usually around $5 EACH!

I used 3 small eye bolts by bending the round part out to an L shape. With the nuts on the back to hold everything down.

Already done.

As for the square LEDs.I actually started with those first, but the (LED)housing is too narrow & didnt fill the lense as much as the round one does.
