PARADOX!!!
Well, I just got back from driver's ed and done with my homework. Went out to work on my rim that I'm polishing and just got done using 2000 grit paper. I noticed that on one spoke, it is smoother than the rest. I mean it has been sanded down farther with 400 grit and you can't see any machining lines, while on the other spokes you can. After finishing 3 coats of Mothers Aluminum Polish, I noticed the smoother one doesn't have as good as shine as the others. Any help as to why would be appreciated. Oh ya, here's another confusing paradox, I can drive myself to driver's ed now.

i dont quite understand. However if you sand everything down starting from 220 grit moving up to 2000, it should be all the same. after you sand it with 2000, use some rubbing compound and rub it in for a while. then use mothers or whatever. im kind of confused by your post but i hope that helps. anything else??
try using mothers aluminum polish with some 4 odd steel wool. after that use this stuff you can get from the grocery stroe called "Brasso" and rub that in real good and things should be good.

I know exactly what you are talking about 2 of my wheels are very smooth and 2 of them are kind bumpy, it is a factory defect in the wheels I guess. probably would have to do some major sanding to get them smooth.

When I did my plenum I used a three part abrasive block. One Red for heavy cutting, green for a nice shine and white to really shine it up. The white buffing compound does better than my mothers aluminum polish. If I hit the plenum with the mothers after the white stuff, it actually dulls it a little.

Rob P, the Red ripped the cast off? or did you sand the cast off?

What I mean is, I didn't spend a lot of time getting the machining lines off. After I sanded the rim with 2000 grit paper and polished, the part of the rim with the machining lines has a better shine than the totally smooth part. The totally smooth part sort of bleeds the shine like unpolished metal. I polished it 3 separate times so I know it's not just a bad polish. My question is why does it do that. Oh ya, I just finished my instruction permit test at the DPS office and I want to ask the question, Why do we need to know the color of the flag that should hang from a tow chain? Is it just another stupid government law or is there logic behind it?
edit: The reason for not totally sanding down the machining lines is 1) I'm lazy and 2) a car that looks really good is more likely to get stolen.

Well, I'm far from the smartest person on this... But I'd assume the ones where the machine lines was just sanded better later on with the higher grits. Which is why you can see the machine marks, but still shines. As far as I've known, the smoother the metal, the more shine it can make. Also, if you have a buffer or die grinder, try going to home depot and buying a polishing kit. It'll have four buffing pads and three compounds. Use the white one on the smooth area and see if it doesn't shine alot better.
