Performance Carb for '84 2.8L???
Has anyone out there ever put a performance carburetor on an '82-'84 2.8L V6 in a Camaro???? A V8 conversion is not an option for me....way too expensive to do it right (and anything worth doing is worth doing right), and I've got too much cash tied up in my BMW 3-series (WAY too much) and an upcoming engagement ring. I'm not looking to make a race car, I just want to pick up maybe another 10-15 HP if possible. The car already has a nice suspension (F41 package), so I just want to pick up a little more acceleration and I'll be happy with it.
I just haven't run across anyone who has ever put a performance carb on a 2.8L. I really don't care if it's 4bbl or 2bbl...though I suspect that 2bbl being associated with performance may be a paradox....

Holley makes a 390 cfm 4 barrel carb that is supposed to work for the 2.8 litre. http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLin...SC/0-8007.html
If I remember correctly, you also need to get a different intake manifold from Edelbrock. Go to the Edelbrock website and look for the following parts to see a description of the intake manifold.
# Performer 4V 60° V6 Base ....#3785*
# Performer 4V 60° V6 Top (non-EGR) ....#3789*
I was looking into this setup as a possibility when I get around to working on my 84' Firebird. If you have to get the Edelbrock intake the project will start to get a little expensive.
Does anyone know for sure if a different intake is needed to use that carb?
Is there an adapter that can be bought to make the carb. work?
By the way, according to my Rochester carburetor book, your stock 2bbl carb is rated at 400 cfm.

REALLY?? 400 cfm out of that little Rochester, wow. I never would have guessed that! If the holley is smaller anyway, maybe I should stick with the stock carb...I've gotten to be a backyard pro at rebuilding the darn thing anyway.
Would the Edelbrock intake make much of a difference in performance if I kept the stock carb???

2bbl and 4bbl carbs are rated differently. The 400cfm rochester DOES NOT out flow the 390 cfm 4 bbl. I can't remember the formula to convert but 400cfm@3" drop works out to somewhere in the mid 200cfm range at the 4bbl standard. The 4 bbl will be a much better all around performing carb.
Is it worth it? I'd have to say not. leave it alone and put the money somewhere better spent...like a car with a v8.
