What Wheels should I get? *Formula White on Charcoal* PICS

I am getting my Formula repainted stock colors and stock decals and everything. What wheels should I get? I am thinking of getting ZR1 Wheels and painting them to match the Charcoal on the bottom...

What does everyone else think? I want my car to stand apart from the crowd and look clean. I want 17's for the tire selection...

The car is all business. Car is used for drag racing and time attacks...

Trying to find an affordable set of wheels.

Here it is with my old GTA wheels (sold wheels)

And here is one with the stock wheels on Drag Radials

i think the chrome clashes with your paint job, but i like GTA ris. Maybe the GTA rims all black with a orange lip?

I never had chrome rims on my car. Black GTA rims with an Orange lip is not my style at all. I remember someone had a 2 tone firebird with the rims painted to match the charcoal. Anyone know what car I am talking about?

Those Year One snowflake replicas with black spokes would be cool.

Your car already stands out from a crowd with the paint scheme. Zr1 wheels aren't the way to go if you want to further separate yourself. Look at some aftermarket options that aren't factory replicas. There are some nice choices for under a grand.

I currently have a set of 10 Spoke SS wheels I was thinking about painting Charcoal, but decided I would like the ZR1's more. What does everyone else think?

Those are some nice wheels! I am not sure how they would look on my Formy though... I want something that looks really clean, and says all business... I am not a fan of flashy chrome wheels.

I could see more logic if the car was still stock, but at this point, the only thing on the car that hasn't been changed is the body pretty much. I will keep the Formula wheels (still have good tires and drag radials)... I just want a nice set to DD on, and when I upgrade the brakes, I am going to need 17" wheels anyways.

As bad *** as they are, R15's are out of the question. There is already a guy on here with the same paint scheme and I am not a fan of the way they look on it.

Right now I am really liking the Year One snowflake wheels. I am thinking tinted windows, lowering it, and the 17" snowflake wheels.

It would be about $600 cheaper to just go with ZR1 wheels.

Meh, still can't decide. Paint got bumped to March... I am looking for the PERFECT set... Trying to stay away from Replica's... After all the money I am spending on paint, no point on skimping on wheels...

So lets hear some more idea's!

Here's a few pics of my car. Hyperblack 17" ZR1's. Also lowerd about an inch and a half with eibach sportlines.

I personally love them, have just a little bit of a dish which is nice, and i think it goes good with the white.

I have 17x11 and 17x9.5 ZR1 wheels new in their boxes, along with a set of 4 17x9 SS wheels, but I think I want to stay away from replica's... I will probably have the ZR1 wheels painted and mount them until I find the perfect set.

Head over to the ZR-1 Net Registry forum. There is a set of Gen 2 Dymag magnesium wheels for sale. Classic, simple design and lightweight to boot.

Sorry, not a fan at all... Would be much easier to stick with my WAY nicer ZR1 wheels... Any other unique wheels? Seems like my taste is a bit different then others...

I know there are a ton of awesome wheels, but I am looking for something to compliment the stock paint... Polished/Chrome wheels would be hard to pull...

Re: What Wheels should I get? *Formula White on Charcoal* PICS

The problem you run into is the cheap aftermarket wheels... are cheap aftermarket wheels. They dont conform to any independent wheel standards. No one goes behind them to verify their integrity. You're at the whims of the manufacturer. Even replica wheels are heavier and tend to be made with cheaper alloys that arent as strong as OEM.

Brands like HRE, BBS, Rays, Volk, Fikse, Classic Custom Wheel, etc are good stuff. Weld's RTS wheels are tough too. Look for wheels that are used by race teams. I would assume American Racing wheels are generally safe too.

If you want to have a car that you dont have to be terrified of taking a hard corner in (evasive action) or hitting a pothole, it's best to spend on quality wheels or retrofit an OEM wheel onto your application.

Personally I'd just stick with any OEM wheel. These things are over-engineered and designed for abuse. But if you have the money to get some quality aftermarket wheels go for it. I'd avoid replicas. They're not tested by anyone to verify their safety and Ive seen a few of them fail. Avoid any company advertising forged wheels in southern florida too. The whole Cor wheels fiasco exposed a lot of the shifty nature of these copycat "forged wheel companies". They all import their "forged" wheel parts from China and assemble them together in southern florida and sell them for $3-5k a set.

Those Dymag wheels are quite awesome. If I had hte money I'd totally get those and restore them. Very unique pieces.

I have no issues spending money on a good set of wheels... I am aware of the potiential shotty quality or replica's. The only reason I don't stick with OEM is because I plan on getting bigger brakes and will need 17" wheels.

I dont mean OEM for third generation F-bodies. I mean anything OEM with the right bolt pattern.

Those pictures are of 360 Forged wheels. They're made from the same Chinese parts all the other southern florida "forged wheel" companies are.

If you'll notice, a lot of those companies have VERY similar looking wheels.

Sevas had a big fiasco where more and more customers started noticing cracks on their wheels, and the company eventually went under. they probably reformed into another Miami wheel company, because theres a ton of them.

Keep in mind these are wheels that generally cost 3000-5000 per set. But there is no testing done on these designs to prove their design or alloy strength. They're not JWL or TUV approved or anything like that. They're just a company that imports good looking chinese wheel hoops and centers, and assembles them and charges $3000-$5000 for them.

COR - http://www.importgenius.com/importers/cor-llc
360 Forged
Sevas
Strasse Forged
MHT wheels (allegedly the company that actually makes all of these wheels, I dont know about that but they're in California instead of southern florida. Florida and California are hotbeds for imported chinese goods)

And there's more, there's a lot of forged wheel companies in the Miami area that popped up out of nowhere, advertise their wheels as high end show or usually track wheels for performance cars, and when their wheels start breaking they just fold up shop and 3 more companies pop up out of nowhere. Even oewheelsllc , the company that makes all those replica ZR1 and Z06 and other corvette wheels that are so popular, they're based in southern florida. The difference is that they dont charge $4k per set.

And oewheelsllc 's website says this:

The quality control program includes such steps as x-rays and pressurized immersion. All of our rims have passed or exceeded required safety testing and are TUV, JWL, SAE, VIA or DOT approved.
Im not sure how much I trust that.

Didnt seem to help a certain Firebird on Frrax:

Does this look like a quality casting to you?

Just be really careful with chinese imported wheels. They may be okay for light street use but these companies can disappear in the blink of an eye, dodge any and all potential warranty claims, and they're not held to the same standards that OEM's are.

Also, these are all made by different southern florida wheel companies "made in the USA" (Cor claims they're made in the US too, but you can see their import log above. Unfortunately to do searches on companies you have to pay to be a member of that site, but someone looked into it and found that. All they do is just assembled chinese parts, and charge $5k per set of wheels)

You'll notice some are not identical, because there's various options with wheel lips and concave vs straight spokes and stepped lips etc and they dont show all the options. But you can see the designs are often VERY, VERY similar across these brands, with most being identical, and those are just 4 of them that I picked at random. Be aware of any upstart forged wheel company with no reputation in southern florida. These things are NOT safe and are NOT JWL or TUV approved, and they are NOT designed for any kind of track use, and if they're not designed for track use they cant handle potholes and curbs and any emergency evasive action without endangering you and your family.

1. Cor wheels are "made in the USA"
2. Cor wheels are the same designs as all of the other no-reputation wheel companies
3. Cor imports wheel hops and parts from China http://www.importgenius.com/importers/cor-llc
4. These other companies use the exact same looking wheels, also "Whatever [forged]", also "made in the usa"
5. None of these wheels are TUV or JWL or VIA certified.
6. They have been known to break.

The COR wheels above that broke were at a track on a track day, but tehy were on street tires. I dont care what wheel you have, it should not ever break on street tires unless you HIT something with it. Add in the fact that they're multi-piece $5000 "forged" wheels, and they should never break, PERIOD. But they do, and under stresses that our wheels see every day.

I vote C6s... I think thin 5 spokers would look excellent on your car, especially with the bigger brakes. You can get them in 17" sets as well. Not to gawdy, but big enough, and would look very clean.

I think they're all junk, a lot of guys are jumping to their defense because they didnt want to honor the warranty claim of the guy that broke the COR wheel in my post. They say "Track use" blah blah blah, but COR went and changed the wording of the warranty to include "track use" in addition to "competition use" after the owner went to COR for the warranty. He was merely at a track day, not a race.

Now both sides have lawyered up and you cant get anything out of either. But it seems to me like the owner sent the wheels to COR for "inspection". They denied the warranty claim, the owner lawyer'd up and asked for compensation for damages. Cor then changed the warranty info on their site in response, and then THEY lawyer'd up. They're holding onto the wheels (evidence) and wont send them back. And now the damage is done and no one can find out anything more about it. But it reeks of shadiness in my opinion. I could cut COR some slack if they were using stick race compound tires... but they were using street tires when they broke. OEM wheels can handle a track day on street tires and OEM wheels are ostensibly "free".

There's also a bunch of squabbling over how the owner certainly must have powdercoated the wheels, and the powder coat process weakened them. He says they were painted by a professional wheel shop. Then people are claiming they used some horrible acidic paint stripper on them. That was also denied. But everyone was jumping at straws to help COR, but I've seen so many powder coated wheels out there working fine. If the wheels cant handle a powder coat they cant handle being on a car, especialyl for that kind of money.

But I read another thread about how one of the cookie cutter companies messed up threading the hoops for the center, and you can see how they clocked the threaded holes wrong, and then had to re tap them a few mm away, and the holes actually overlap. They told the owner that was fine and not to worry about it but it looks REALLY bad.

these are "ADV.1" wheels. Notice the maybe Chinese lettering? Also allegedly "made in the USA".

You can see a lot of the same ones there that all the other companies make. Kind of depressing really. And theyre also based in Miami. Not even surprised anymore, really.

Here's that wheel with the usual suspects in the background:

First wheel in the picture from COR:

First from MHT:

Its a shame because these are some gorgeous wheels. But just be careful guys, some of these may not be very strong designs.

LOL I just caught that the wheels on the blue corvette above are not 360 forged, but are "Forged 1"s Concave Seven wheel.

All those wheels are machined from alike concave forgings, so you're sayig the forgings are chinese or the complete wheels are chinese? If the complete wheels are chinese then the price tag is just plain robbery.

Its really hard to say. But we've figured out that all tehse companies offer mostly the same wheels. Cor is one of those companies. This is Cor's import record:

http://www.importgenius.com/importers/cor-llc

Shipper
TAE CHANG INDUSTRIAL CO., LTD.
958 WOLAM-DONG, DALSEO-GU DAEGU KR TAE CHANG

Port of Loading
Ching Tao

Port of Discharge
Miami, Florida

Notice port of discharge is Miami, FL, I think this is why so many of these companies are in Miami, easy to ship there. They can just send a ship from china through the panama canal and straight to miami. A lot of Nissan GTR scams importing R32, R33, and R34 cars illegally or gray market style go through california and Miami. They're often disassembled offshore in Caribbean nations and smuggled right over to miami and reassembled stateside. The ones that even go through that much trouble. Customs normally just confiscates them outright anyway.

And back to the topic... this is the most pertinent thing on that page:

Declaration of Goods
ALUMMINUM RIM COMPONENTS

Aluminum rim components... kind of open ended, but it certainly doesnt say aluminum stock, or forged aluminum ore, or billet aluminum, raw aluminum, or anything like that. It says "rim components". You can take from that whatever you like but it definitely says to me that it calls into question exactly how much is "made in the USA" on these, and they ALL claim that. Rim components means these raw materials are at least partially manufactured/machined before they ever make it here.

Edit: found MHT http://www.importgenius.com/importer...ech-wheels-inc

MHT Hi Tech Wheels:

Port of Loading
Ching Tao

Declaration of Goods
ALUMINIUM WHEELS

Compare to HRE:

http://www.importgenius.com/importer...ormance-wheels

Port of Loading
Felixstowe

Shows Germany and England as trading partners.

I cant find 360 forged, strasse forged, or Forged 1, because I think they'rej ust too generic and their official company name is probably something different.

Whats raelly funny is ADV.1 claims California as their "production/manufacturing" location, but you can look through their wheels and see they're clearly the same ones that MHT, 360, Cor, etc sell.

http://www.adv1wheels.com/adv1wheels/contact.php

I imagine they're assembled in California, straight off the boat from Ching Tao.

I've always wanted to use a set of the z06 spyder wheels in charcoal. However, I can't find a set in a non staggered size.
