Since im poor and always willing to try something out, i decided to wrap my own car.

I took the Gunmetal metallic vinyl (150 micron thickness)

I did it outside and all by myself ( )

Better to do it inside and at least 2 persons.

it costed me about 400 euro's and a lot! of patience.

 

The small wrinkles you can see were taken care of later. its perfect now.

 

 

Not very clear but here i just did the hood.



I applied them wet, so after sticking it on the car i had to wait till it was dry, then i took care of bubbles and wrinkles.

 

Im also putting on Heritage Stripes (white).
I had them custom made with 5.7 LTR on it.



The car is almost finished, ill put pictures online later!

windows will be 35% tinted also.

I see you had what looked like decent paint there to begin with. Always wondered if this would work over a proper primer job...

the stripes are white.

The car's paint looked okay, but it wasnt, the hood was darker blue, and it had many chips, scratches and some rust spots.


i took care of it all.

You should think the vinyl would cover up some minor imperfections, but it doesnt.

A small scratch from rough sanding will show in the vinyl!

So it wont be a quick easy fix for that.

But it is fun to do, you have to clean the doors from its handle, lock, weather strips, etc.

I also took my windshield out for easier working, but it also was falling apart because of moisture, it has a new window now.

 

Beware that vinyl can stick like mad! if you put it on and take it off, because of air bubbles for instance, it can rip of the paint (rattlecan paint will come off!)

I even had repaired a big chip with bondo, the vinyl ripped it right off.
So beware of that.

I closed the holes in the frontlip, i always wondered how it would look and im happy with it.

 

Here you can see the stripes on the back, still have to stick on the stripes on the hood.

im wondering that too, to be honest.

I do have 2 electric fans and ill keep an eye on it.

If it affect cooling too much in a bad way, ill cut it open again.

On the other hand, later model camaro's don't have those holes either...

ive been debating on wrappin my car either matte red or matte white. how hard was it to do and was it your first time wrapping?

and good job doing it solo!

 

It was my first time, and its not thát hard to do.


Just do 1 section at a time and i used some soapy water to make the job somewhat easier.

The vinyl is user friendly, you can shrink it, stretch it and do it over again.

on the front you have to cheat a little, because the deep pockets are too deep to stretch it that much.

I used a plastic scraper with a sock around it and a hairdryer and a heatgun.

 

it is fragile i must say, you can wash it like normally, but if i put my nail in it hard, it will show.

I didnt had much choice for colors at the time, only brown, blue, dark grey, gunmetal, black and white (metallic colors that is)

They have other colors but those are much thinner, and not for full car wrap.

Make sure you get the EXTREME wrap and not the EASY wrap

I'm going to attempt doing this to vert in a few months, if the weather ever improves.

 

what do you mean by "blend the panels" ? (my english isnt that great, im dutch).


I tried doing the headlight buckets in 1 piece, but it was too much stretch for the vinyl.

So i used a separate piece, the edges are at the same place as where my headlight clearcovers are going to be, so it wont show.

The whole front is the hardest to do, deep holes and sharp edges, you have to cheat a little.


one tip: i used a thin line of superglue on the edges where the vinyl ends, it wont show and it will keep the vinyl on its place, otherwise there is a good chance the vinyl will crawl back.


Second tip: don't try to stretch the vinyl cold, it will tear. always heat it up.

If someone will try this also, feel free to ask me anything!

 

like where the quarter panel and roof meet by the rear hatch glass. is there a line from the 2 layers of vinyl overlapping?

 

Talk about being different. I like what you did with the wrap. Definitely a new look for the thirdgen. You did a good job. You have mad skills.

 

no overlapping, the 2 layers are cut at 1 line, so to speak.

That's the only problem with these cars, you cant do the roof and quarter panels with 1 layer.

If you have t-tops you dont have that problem, then you can take 1 long piece and do both rear quarters together.

the roof and a-pillars are done in 1 layer.

 

Did you get these off ebay? I saw a guy selling some "customizable" heritage kits. If so... how was the quality?

quality is okay, i still have to do the hood stickers.

I do have a hard time getting the airbubbles out, i must say.

Don't know if it has to do with the quality or my lack of experience.

 

Same guy I talked to. I'm having him send me samples of his material for the Z03 haha. I have never done a vinyl anything so might be a lot of learning for both of us.

 

Please don't take offense, I'm a little confused. By layer do you mean sheets?
I understand layers to be something like one sheet on top of each other. Similar to an onion.
I'm assuming that you would only have one layer over the entire car, but would use multiple sheets of the wrap next to each other. I hope that is clear.

If I have that correct, then what you're saying is that the edges are cut at 1 line to make an nearly invisible seam?

 

I think by layers, he means seams or overlaps. You have to have a little overlap, because the vinyl will shrink. Install the two sheets where they meet perfectly, and you'll have a gap before too long.
