Re: rear hatch tint problem
I have to remove nasty tint from the hatch window on my RS, I have never tried the acetone, but I have used a razer blad with goo gone and it worked in the past, but if you have rear defrost then you don't want to scrape on it. My RS does not have rear defrost so i'm not worried. Once I get the tint off I think I will try the acetone truck since I have some at the house.

Yeah, pulling the tint foil off as it is will most certainly kill the defroster grid, as would cutting of any kind.
Best to heat up the foil before removing it, then removing the rest with acetone.

Acetone so a good solvent, but be real careful with it. Don't drip or spill and on the interior trim plastics, it will damage the surface of the trim.

Re: rear hatch tint problem
I got a "new" truck a couple weeks ago that used to have one of thoase small round mirrors on the drivers side mirror but it was gone. Had some adhesive residue left behind & the Goo Gone I had wouldn't touch it, nor the residue left behind from the old registration sticker. Found my acetone later & it stripped both off with very little effort.

I highly recommend NOT using heat. At most? Maybe spray some acetone on, cover it (from underneath) with some black plastic bags & let the sun heat it up. But really? Try it without any first. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at well the acetone will work.

Yes, be VERY careful!!! I recommend NO heat at all. I tried that once thinking I was being careful but POP! Had to buy new glass.

Steam it off with a steamer. It will take awhile, but the tint will come off with the glue attached. The steam will not burn the defrost grid. I just did this on my car, and the tint was probably 25 years old. It came off with no issues.

I don't have a steamer and I don't have defrost, I'm sure between acetone and a razor scapper it will come off nice.

Make sure that when you use the acetone, you have plenty of ventilation. Follow any and all cautions on the can and wipe it up immediately if you get it on the paint or plastic.

Re: rear hatch tint problem
Seriously, acetone? Wow.
Warm or hot water in a spray bottle mixed with dish soap got rid of the glue after I ripped the plastic off (it already was purple and had holes in it). And it didn't stink so bad I needed to wear a respirator. Of course, I also scraped it off with a razor blade as I don't have a defroster grid (one of the reasons I hate winters with my car
).
:edit: There is also some stuff called Tint-Off, I believe...

Re: rear hatch tint problem
I've had 9 firebirds/camaros in the passed 15 years and never had to worry about tinting the rear hatch window. All of the cars already had tinted windows, few times i had to re tint 'em but without any issues. I recently bought one with clear hatch window, and when i went to get it tinted, there are few issues apparently. The man at the shop said that they cant tint over the heating lines that run vertically on both sides (2 lines that stick up, from which defrost lines run from) and also the thicker lines that are towards the top of the glass, they said that tints wont stick to it. I was surprised because I had one piece tint done on the rear hatch of the trans am and my z28, it was fully tinted. I never noticed if the defrost lines were there or not, I live in Fl so i dont get to use it anyway. So how do I go about tinting the rear hatch on my 89 firebird ? rip off the heating lines or...
