Can You Chrome Your Wheels??
I was looking at a website and the guy was talking about how he might either paint or chrome his wheels? Is this possible, and if so how much?

Triple coated provides a better shine. In California there was a place going to do mine for 600-700. But I bought new wheels. You can get any metal chromed I guess if you wanted to.

Chrome plating of aluminum isn't done quite the same way as plating of steel. Because of this, there are very few places that you can actually send your wheels. After polishing the aluminum, they have to vaporize copper onto the wheels so that the nickle will have something to plate to. Polishing of each layer of metal leads to a super shiny surface, but a top quality polish job of the wheel prior to the plating process is the most important step imho. I have seen many chrome plated IROC wheels out there with real rough corners and grooves, which I think looks real bad. Because the copper is vaporized and not plated, chrome plated wheels will have a tendency to peel more in areas where the wheel isn't polished (like the back side and inside the rim). One upside though is that your wheels will never rust through the chrome like steel wheels will.
I had my wheels plated in '92, and while I have some peeling on the back, you don't notice it at all when the wheels are mounted on the car. Starting about a year ago, one of my tires goes flat every month of so because of minor peeling on the bead of the rim. Not much you can do about that (we have put a rubber compound on it that helps some), and I've learned to live with that. I mean, the wheels really make my car.
It would probably be cheaper to buy a set of aftermarket chrome plated 16" IROC wheels then to buy a set of originals and have them done. And of course if you want 17" or larger, aftermarket ones are the only choice. If you already have a set of wheels, the price will be about a wash. Hope this helps you a little.

A new set of chrome are like $1000 aren't they. It would be a lot cheaper to have mine chrome plated, but I don't want something that is going to flake off.

depends on who does the work like with anything else, i've seen guys who have went to their local tire shop and spent around 900 to have them chrome and they look great and have lasted a while.
i had mine done specially, mainly for the shine; there is a huge difference side by side....but also for the durability. mine have been on the car for over 5 years and still look great.

While we're talking about this...mine have actually dulled a little in the pits around the corners. Upsets me, but nothing I can do. They still look good, and under most conditions youd never notice it, but when I get close enough I can see one place shining less than another. Makes me mad. This was through AAARims.com also.
