paint opinions!!!

I'm gonna be getting ready to paint my 85 z28 pretty soon and I need some opinions!!! I want to do the car Purple Haze, but I can't decide if I want the heritage stripes to be black, or a marble effect silver, what do you guys think? Also should I do the stripes just on the hood, or run them back the length of the car and end them on the spoiler? I'm kinda leaning towards marble effect silver all the way back to the spoiler. BTW, I have just a standard hood on the car, not the z28 hood so no blisters or anything to work around.

Re: paint opinions!!!

That's a cool color. Post pics when it's done.

Might be cool to paint the car a solid color, clear it, tape off your stripes, hit it with a matte clear for your stripes. It won't stand out until you get up close and would get that "ah-hah" factor.

Re: paint opinions!!!

I do like your idea, but all of the third gens I've had have been a solid color, this one I want to change up and actually have something on it that stands out lol. It would look really sweet how you described, just not what I'm going for on this one.

Re: paint opinions!!!

The stripes didn't go over the roof of the car originally, so it will look a little odd. Just my opinion. Any time that I striped a car, I tried to go with what the stripe options were for that car (meaning if the car originally had them on the roof or not, or if they extended to the bumpers, etc.) even if the stripe colors weren't among the original options.

But at the end of the day, it's your car. Build it the way that you want. Just my 2 cents.

Re: paint opinions!!!

See I think it would look a little odd if they didn't go over the roof. I didn't know they never came that way though. That's interesting, I'll have to look into that a little more now. Thanks for the info

Now that I look at it, I think they do look better not striped on the roof...good call!!

Re: paint opinions!!!

The heritage striped cars ('91&'92) had the stripes only on the hood and decklid.

Yea I just edited my post above. You're right, I guess I never really noticed lol. But now that you bring it up I do like how it looks better without the stripes on the roof

Re: paint opinions!!!

I striped a few cars, most of them weren't the original colors, but I tried to do as the car could have been striped. The looks once the car was out of the booth was something along the lines of "Yeah, that looks right. No, wait a second, that's hot."

Re: paint opinions!!!

Not a problem. As long as you like my suggestions, I was a fan of using a lot of pearl and metallic in the stripes, but very little or none in the base coat. The other guy does have a point of using a flat clear on the stripes, but I think that it might end up getting a little too thick. Not sure, it's been a while since I did body work.

Re: paint opinions!!!

I've never tried to lay down marble, but I watched on American Chopper. I think it was the Snap-On bike, but didn't look terribly difficult to do. I'd practice on some test panels before I tried on a customer car. But then again I've been out of the game for a while, I'd be doing a lot of testing before I sprayed paint on a car.

Re: paint opinions!!!

The concept is very easy, its just getting the technique down. And trust me, I will be doing many practice pieces first haha

Re: paint opinions!!!

That could be cool! I'd agree earlier. I think it would look out of place with stripes on the roof, but to each their own! That marble finish is interesting.

I think I'm gonna go with silver so I can try the marble finish. And I'll do the stripes on the hood and the hatch and leave the roof a solid color. If it turns out half as good as the picture I have in my head, its gonna look awesome!!
