3rd gen daily driver
Well i have my Firebird and a bmw as daily driver.Problem is that bmw always has hickups starting in winter (won't fit in garage next to my Firebird ), you can't move your legs like in the 3rd gen ...the space between the door and centralconsole is not wide enough (I am tall) ,they both get pretty much the same mpg as diesel is abit more expensive here (in europe its litres per 100km ) .
anyway ,are Firebirds/camaros good daily drivers in 2015?
They look good and due to their shape they don't look like "old cars" except the headlights. Some people at gas stations even said I have "nice ferrari"
I mean are they going to fell apart in a fender bender at a stop light?I ask because body parts are really expensive to ship from US.
Also ,is anyone else using his /her 3rd gen as daily driver or I'm sounding like a weirdo now?
p.s.I found to buy a v6 Firebird ,I won't use my V8 in the winter...I'm not crazy

I have a 91 Firebird I drive everyday. That is, when their isn't any snow or salt on the road. This is my 2nd 3rd Gen daily driver. I drive 100 miles round trip for work 3 days a week. Water pumps, and fuel pumps are what mostly go's bad. Thats only after 60 - 100k miles or so. Otherwise its just normal things like tires, tuneups Etc. My first 3rd Gen I got 300,000 miles out of it.

Re: 3rd gen daily driver
I drive mine every day, it is my only source of transportation, except the wife's car.
Whats nice about 3rd gens is you can work on them at home and parts are plentiful and cheap. As long as you keep up on scheduled maintenance items, and drive it like a sane, normal human being it will last and be fairly reliable.

Re: 3rd gen daily driver
As for falling apart, my first 3rd Gen was hit twice in 2 months. I pulled out the dents and drove it another 10,000 miles before engine and tranny problems caused me to retire it. Of coarse that was at 300,000 miles like I said above.
Where are you in Europe? Between the Autobahn and mountain switchbacks, I can think of several places it would be fun to drive a 3rd Gen over there.

Re: 3rd gen daily driver

luckly maintenance parts are not pontiac specific and can be found in europe easy but the real disaster is if some idiot breaks a window or wrecks something body related/big which is hard to ship from US.
It good to know that there are still people who drive these daily ...it means i'm not a weirdo or alone .

).These cars run great on autobahn...you can even max out both v6 and v8 here.In Romania there are most 2 lane roads through small towns which tend to overheat both engine and your nerves.as for fender benders i found
the car is too low and in a small crash everything that is designed to save you money goes under most SUVs bumpers. Luckly most people in europe drive shopping carts

This is the wreck I paid $500.00 for 9 years ago and has been my DD for 8.
It took about a year to rebuild and find and fix MOST of the "gremlins"..Another two to save for the paint. etc./etc......
Side note = Tuned Performance found and fixed the last BUG in the car about 8 months ago.

I am happy to say that my 1988 Firebird Formula has been my daily driver for almost five years now. It has never let me down, except in the snow. They are not good snow cars! As far as holding up in accidents, I was hit by an old lady in a Subaru going about 50 mph. I was making a left and she hit my right fender. The car took it very well. I had to replace the fender, but I actually drove the car with the caved in fender for about two weeks before I got around to fixing it. Bottom line, I would not hesitate to make a decent third gen my daily driver. Just not in the snowy times.

Just about any car makes for a reliable enough daily driver if you maintain it and don't abuse it. The F-body's bane is people get ahold of them that don't take care of them and abuse the Hell out of them, and then blame the car when it leaves them stranded. I'd have no qualms with driving a third gen everyday, Hell I'm using a second gen for my everyday car at the moment.

Re: 3rd gen daily driver
I found a v6 1992 @70,000miles but with black matte paint (i hate that) and with some horrible interior modifications ...otherwise the car is perfect plus its probably the cheapest one in Europe (1500€ ...most v6 in Europe are over 4k) .I'm really thinking to buy it and make it back stock (thats paint and interior) and use it as daily driver .It will cost alot to fix the interior because shipping parts from US is not cheap .
The 3.1 v6 is enough in city plus its not a stick shift so that makes it even better for city driving ,its power everything ...on top of that it looks really damn good and thanks to the exotic look doesnt show its age. Most people in Europe don't have a clue what year is
I dont know about US but here pretty much all are well maintained. These cars in Europe are seen as exotic cars and only people with good taste in cars have them ...or thats the general cliche. On the other hand don't get a bmw in europe if you don't want to a a**hole tag on you

Pretty much anything sporty is fair game for getting beat on over here sadly. If you're not set on a third gen might give the 4th gen 3.8 cars a look, 200 hp and gets pretty good fuel mileage.

Re: 3rd gen daily driver
I bought my 1988 camaro RS (350 swap) in 2002 for $500, running but in not the greatest at all. Spent a year restoring interior, rebuilding engine, etc. Built car as a mild "hot rod".
Used it as a daily driver (and only car) up till 2010.. During the 8 years as a DD, I was also racing the car every weekend at the track, got the 'go faster' bug and kept upgrading parts and making it faster and faster, but killed off alot of streetable manners.
So then I used it as a weekend car/toy. Built a V8 S10 with close to the same engine package as my camaro started off as and now I use the S10 as a daily driver and the camaro is my street legal race car. Use it for tooling around town in good weather, car shows and drag racing.
During the 8 years of DD use I could not have been happier with it. The car did very well on the streets, stop and go traffic, out of state trips.

Re: 3rd gen daily driver
i dont think the difference between 3.1 and the 3.8 is worth ...maybe on autobahn the 3.8 is better ,but in city they are pretty much the same plus the 4th gens don't look that great compared to 3rd gens Firebirds.

Re: 3rd gen daily driver
The 3.8 gets a little better fuel economy, but with a good bit more power. I like all generations and really only have a preference for the late second generation cars. As long as the car is solid aside from the dubious modifications I say go for it.

You might want to start a new thread on this in the "Tech/General Engine" section . Not a Dailey Driver thread.
Your going to need some help breaking down the term "Bad Engine" and that's the way you will get it.
.
Side note = I am not picking on you, but you will find that on this site you take the time to write in proper English.
Automotive Tech Abbreviations welcome. I would copy this link for future reference. It helps tremendously. = http://chevroletforum.com/forum/gene...cronyms-11094/

I don't think it was here, but he posted where he lives and it was in Europe. He's doing better than most Americans.
