My flame job idea-- whaddaya think?

It's just a drawing I did; no photoshop or anything, but you get the idea. Zepher's already seen this, but I want some opinions...

Umm, I know it's just a drawing, not a fancy photohack, but... Come on! I've got over 30 views and no opinions!? Is it that bad a drawing or something?

Great Job!! It looks real good. I can easily tell you're an artist, the way you wrote The Plan I can easily tell. I'm an artist also, but for some reason I can't draw cars well, unless I'm looking at them, I can't draw them from my head . Great job tho!

I was thinking the same thing. Looks bugeyed. Not saying I don't like it, just doesn't look original, is it?

Thanks, fellas. Lots of doodling practice from boring core college classes; you guys should see the margins in my notebooks!

I didn't use anything special, just some regular ol' color pencils and markers from my sister's worn out set when she wasn't lookin' hehe.

I'm hoping to paint the car myself, since I doubt Maaco would let me bring the car in three separate times to lay red, then black, then yellow/orange and clear. lol. Plus, they definitely won't do the orange tipping on the flames.

I just saw this long article in Hot Rodding or some Streetrod mag about flame jobs and there was this long step by step photo special in it that made me think: I can do this! So this is my project when I locate some new body parts for my dented beauty. (Darn Aztec driver hit me! Arg!! )

Thanks again, guys! Glad you like it. ~Chris

Flames are cool. I say go for it. When or if you actually paint them, an airbrush would be essential, especially for the tips. Practice on a scrap hood or fender first.

Your drawing is pretty cool...but I seriously think that ghost flames would be the way to go...they look great on thirdgens.

I HAVE A PLAN TO CUSTOMIZE A PAINT JOB ONE DAY!!......but I cant draw...lol. But maybe somebody can or at least try and photoshop it. Okay...well I love the way the formula hood looks on '85-'90 TA's...looks so agressive. So I am going to get a GTA as a project car maybe in a year when I am in college and have time and money. I am going to put the formula hood on the GTA..and either keep the wrap around spoiler...or put a '91-'92 Z28 spoiler on it. I figured I would paint the car a not so common shade of red...not sure yet...but I do love candy apple red...or can always go with a different color. Then then I want to get a small screaming chicken on the top of the bulge with ghost flames fading down the power bulge. I figure that the bird will not totally stand out since it will be painted the same as the flames in the ghost effect. I never saw this done but I always dreamed of doing this to my '83...but looks like I am selling her . I need a car "better on gas" for now as my parents say...but that doesnt mean I will stop looking for a car to buy in a year or two....I just dont kno if I am going to end up with a 4th gen or another 3rd gen in a year or so...hmm...lets c....such a hard choice.

James

I have to agree. The coolest flames I saw were on one of the most boring looking cars that the General ever made. An '81 Malibu.

My friends and I were at Rt. 66 Dragway for the Hot Rod Power Tour, and Rt. 66 had T&T that night. Well this car pulls up to the staging lights, and it was total black. Then as he drove by, the flames showed up. They started out royal blue, then faded into a greenish color, then almost silver, then reversed the process as he got farther away. Eventually the car was black again!!!

It was awesome!!! And I'm sure a lot of money!!!!!

AJ

it looks really good man. have you thought of using white in the front and fading it into yellow flames. I think that would look really good too. just a thought

If you can draw it on paper, you can draw it on a car...

Thanks for the feedback and encouragement guys.

Yeah, I too think ghostflames would be more... well, tasteful, but they'd be harder for a beginner, I think. I'm doing this job b/c for the most part, it's just solid colors with feathered orange at the tips of the licks. If I did ghost flames, I'd want the flame job on that red 4th gen camaro big block concept car that GM made. Remember, it had darker red licks coming from in front of the grill and then faded into bigger orange/yellow flames on the door, then the back was completely white. Sort of reverse flames...

I thought about white up front; that's what that Streetrodding article had done, but I wanted the bumper to have some color in it, especially since I'm planning to cut two holes in it for some amber 4th gen style fog lights (see pic above). I already have some holes in it from where one of the prev owners drilled it for some front vanity plate or somethin so I figgered I might as well cut it up some more... (your thoughts on this idea are also welcome ) Thanks again! ~Chris
