Road grime or undercoating?

Ok, today I looked in the rear wheel wells again, and I pulled another chunk out, It's REALLY thick. Maybe almost an inch thick. I showed my dad, and he said it was either sound deadening material or undercoating. So is there an undercoating type of material in the wheel wells or what? I pulled it out of the rear passenger side. I don't wanna go tear it all out thinking it's years of dirt that's collected, only to find out it's undercoarting Underneath it, it looks kinda like the body, but not quite painted as well...

Unless you bought the car new, you'll never really know WHAT the previous owner(s) did to the car! It could very well be undercoating... or crud... or both! If it was my car I'd tear it all out. If it's real thick stuff and cracked with pieces missing, it'll collect water and cause rust. You definitely don't want rust! Nice to see a fellow Okie here!

I'm up in the NW corner, by Wiley Post airfield. Last time I cruised 39th was in the '70s! (Geeze, am I THAT old?!) Hopefully I'll be back out there this spring with the T/A.
