I know in MD it's 35%, but it differs from state to state.

down here you have to be able to read your DL through the tint. and can only tint 6inch down on front windshield, the front side windows can not be darker than the back ones. I think it is all screwed up !!

These guys have said it all. Contact your Dept. of Motor Vehicles or whatever they call it in NJ. Believe me, it's painless.

Now I just got a ticket for this. And it was from a Highway Patrolman, Texas by the way. Here its 35% on the side windows, anything on the back. All law enforcement angencies will have some kind of meter to measure how much light passes through the tint. It just slides over the window and gives a reading. Mine said 5% on the sides, which I got a ticket for. All I did was send in a fony reciept for the tint being removed and it was dismissed. Now i'm not saying that will work for all, but it did for me, and I still got my nice 5% tint on the sides.

Best thing to do is contact the proper authorities on the subject, mentioned previously.

minesota is 50% but I got 35% all around, when I brought my car in the guy told me what the leagal limit was. Beacuse i wanted it darker I had to sign a waver that said I knew the limit the shop wasn't responsible. Just call a shop and ask them, they should know.

The problem he will have in NJ is the state inspection. They are long drive thru style garages taht test everything. They check that all 4 brakes grab equally within a tolerance, they check the aim of headlights and verify if all lights work. Any cracked window is a failure, so they will check the windows.

Best advice, find out what the state allows, and don't go below that(in NJ) because you will have to take it off every year.

When i was living in NJ (1976-1991), tint was not allowed on any window because an officer Lamonaco was shot while doing a routine traffic stop and the car had tinted windows. Did they finally change the law?
