I own both an 84 SC camaro and an 84 Trans Am. I got the camaro first. I'd say the camaro is less radically styled. I didnt like how the trans am looked when I first got it(bought strictly to make fast w/350, first cheap V-8 I found), but it has grown on me to the point I think it looks better than the camaro, especially from the back. Both are damn good looking cars. If I had to buy another one, Id get a firebird though. The interior is 10X as nice in my Trans Am, better gauge layout, better seats. The firebird is much less common, and I like to be different.

True, I remember at my high school, there were like 50 Camaros, about 2 Firebirds, but I was the only one with a Trans am. I like to be different too.

Theres a reason there are so many Camaros out there, and why they have outsold Firebirds every year since they both came out.

When I look at a Firebird, it strikes me as a girl's car, but a Camaro seems to have some ***** to it.

Though I do like the look of Firebirds from the 2nd and 4th Gen better than Camaros.

ok here is my opinion. if you want a rare car get a trans am. in a town of 250,000(where I live) I have seen 2 other GTA's beside mine. Iroc-z's you see EVERYWHERE. I'm not saying one is better than the other. I just think the GTA's get more heads to turn cause you don't see em alot. both run good, just all in the look. firebirds are known for their "prep" where camaros are known for the "muscle" justmy opinoins thouh

Ahem....
There are some Firebirds with ***** too, Mark. They are the same in most every respect except body style. Pontiac Firebirds do cost more than Camaros and that is why there are fewer Firebirds out there than Camaros. A serious person on a budget would buy a Camaro over a Firebird. It's been true from day one.
You upscale the features and goodies, then put a higher price tag on it.
GMC/Chevrolet/Pontiac/Buick/Oldsmobile/Cadillac
Ford/Mercury/Lincoln
etc....
It's just a question of what the buyer is willing to pay, and what the buyer wants. No doubt about the Camaro being one of the most popular cars. It's the best bang for the buck! Still is!
Edit:
Does this make the Firebird or Camaro higher performance over the other? Heck NO. They are virtually identical mechanically and structurally. There are exceptions on both sides. The TTA comes to mind when I think a little.
Could you do the same thing with a Camaro? Sure!

Most idiotic comment goes to..................Mark A shields.

Considering my car would walk the dog on you (along with many other firebirds on here) I wouldn't consider it a girls car.

Jokingly of course.

And I'm drunk thanks to Mr. Zemkoff . Wow guys look ....I can still spell.

There has never been THAT much difference in price of the cars. People are gonna pay for what they like. Thats not the reason they sell less. The Camaro is more liked, and it should be. The Pontiac Firebird owes everything to the Camaro and Chevrolet.

Et All

I just told you why. Dude, you are really bent out of shape because of opinion? I'm not stating anything that isn't already known.
I never said one was better than the other at all.
Let's take it to today.
How much difference in price is there between a Camaro SS WS6 and a Pontiac Trans-AM WS6?
Fair comparison?
It was the same then as it is now. The only difference is inflation.

Let's put it in English terms.

Okay so you get my drift.
You can get the Jumbo Jack for 99 cents without cheese.
OR...
You can get the Jumbo Jack for $1.49 with cheese.
OR....
You can get the Jumbo Jack and go home and slap some cheese on it.
Sound cheesy?
It's the same concept. Just with cars.
And YES I am right.

No, and YES I think you are wrong. There was times the Camaro was more money and it had no affect on its sales. I do agree the Firebird was usually more, which is pretty stupid, but a performance car buyer will pay and pay whatever the price for what they want. When the cars were priced nearly the same, the result was still the same. There is more of a following for the Camaro and Chevrolet cars in general. Thats just the way it is. More people like the Camaros personality, originality, looks, and history. None of those things have to do with price.

Like I said.

It is opinion here.
And it is MY opinion that the reason that the Firebirds never outsold Camaros was that reason alone. Period. The Firebird has always been more expensive, feature for feature.
I have never seen a Camaro end up being more expensive than a Firebird. (NEW.)
Name one.
They were never priced nearly the same. Firebirds were always priced much higher than Camaro.

82.

Camaro Z28: $10,009
Firebird Trans Am: $9,685

Then in the following years the models were barely $100 different in price until later. I also think the was barely a difference in the 1st Gen.

.. And in '82

How many were sold of each model?
Did the Camaro Z28 outsell the Pontiac Firebird in 1982? And are you being true to your word feature for feature?
I can doubt it. There are people who will doubt you too.
Performance is another attribute and marketing.
Marketing and targeting a mainstream is another reason. Why did the SUV all of the sudden become the F-Body's downfall? And why is Chevrolet and Pontiac stopping production on the flagship cars they have?
It's marketing and targeting. Myself, I like the Firebird more than the Camaro. You prefer the Camaro over the Firebird. The truth of the matter is this:
They are virtually the same automobile, and it is a question of what you prefer. I made it very clear I prefer the Firebird. And I also believe that the price of the cars (especially the price GAP that ensued as the Firebird became more popular) made people think about Camaro as the first choice.
A lot of people who have bought Camaros have told me they chose the Camaro because the price of the Firebird isn't justfied.
Why is that? When they are virtually the same automobile?

The Camaro outsold the Firebird EVERY year. This is base price. And I think a Z28 with the IROC-Z option was more than a TA until the GTA came out.

A lot of people who have bought Camaros have told me they chose the Camaro because the price of the Firebird isn't justfied.

Alot of people told me they bought a Camaro because they like it better. Like I said before, more people like the Camaro's personality, looks, and history. None of those things have to do with price. I knew lots of kids in school that wanted previous Gen Camaros but not Firebirds. There were like none.

And why are we arguing about it?
You have your opinion as I have. I am not in the mood to debate it further. I just told you the reasons that is so. You can believe what you want to and I will myself. Camaros and Firebirds are both great cars and you're making it sound (as I am) that our cars are better than the other.
Hehehe.
I'm not gonna argue with it, because it's frutiless to argue with someone so refined and pure Chevy as I am Pontiac.
I myself have a Chevrolet 4 bolt main in my Pontiac. Oooh.
Gee, I wonder why?
If you want to say the Camaro is more popular, so be it. I don't mind. I prefer the Firebird's looks. Does that make you feel better?

I'm not really interested in opinion here. I do like both cars and divisions, I just like the Camaro and Chevrolet more. I told you why, so whatever. Even stats and stuff are BS I guess. And this is a discussion.

Dude, when you reply, is there a delay?? I'm having to wait on even editing.

Big time!

Yeah there is a big time delay. We are cross-posting. I had to make myself something to eat lol. Yeah the system is slow right now.
No hard feelings at all. I know how you feel.
I feel the same way about my car.
At least I don't have a Chevette.

Just a footnote.

Yeah but you know, we are getting burned. GM has put an end to an era with the halting of production of the F-Body. That's what's so shameful. They push the ATV/SUV/Trucks now.
I hate trucks. I even had one, and I hated it. Trucks are something you borrow from you neighbor lol.
Now all we see are the imports taking up the slack, and Ford Motor Company going crazy.
What are we to do? Is the Monaro/GTO the replacement? Back to the mainstream and forget uniqueness?
The Corvette is the only unique American sportscar left? G'z. Okay so they abolish the F-Body and replace it with a Grand-Am'ish looking RWD car.
*Sigh*
That's what I loved about the F-Body. Are there going to be groups of people like us in the future with a mainstream ordinary looking automobile?
I hope GM does realize they will lose out and hopefully rebuild/redesign the F-Body. Maybe they will produce them at the Corvette factory? (I've heard rumours of that)
Or are they forcing us out and making us push ourselves to spend more money on the Corvette? Or just make us dream and never be able to get one?
It is such a shame. Take something away that has worked for so long, and a bunch of bean counters out there say, "LOOK AT HOW MUCH MONEY WE ARE MAKING ON THE SUV!"
A fad is passing them by and the sports car is emerging once again, and GM has let us down.

If you want to really discuss this more with others and where its allowed, (LOL) CamaroZ28.com's 5th Gen board is great for it. Alot of information and stuff there.

Jokingly of course.

Man, I wasn't sayin that was it, I'm just sayin most firebirds look like a girl's car to me (that's my opinion) not to say they don't look good, cause some of them on these boards just look awesome.

Oh, and about your car whoopin mine, please that's no contest, you'd smoke me , G0D damn gears and cam and slipping tranny, second thought maybe I should get a Firebird.

They offered a buick engine in the trans am I've owned both a Camaro and a Firebird. I like the looks of the Iroc, but can't beat the boost on the TTA!

I'd go for the Camaro... the 'Birds just don't look mean enough. If I was gonna get a Firebird though, I'd settle for the 91-92 style. Still, Firebirds are too rounded for my taste .

convert! convert! convert! JK

The reason in buying a firebird or camaro shouldn't be because one is faster than the other. Stock the came with the same drivetrains. It is merely a preference of aesthetic appeal.
I personally love the look of IROCs. I LOVE EM. Thats what I was looking for before I bought my bird. But every one I saw for sale was ragged out. Then I ended up at an auction and bought my firebird for $1800 bucks. It was in pretty decent condition except for usual wear and tear.

The lexus to the left has since been replaced with a 2002 vette convert. silver/black.

This is how it looked when I bought It but paint was i better condition.
It has since changed just a little .

The look grew on me and now I am damn glad I purchased it instead of a camaro.

I like them both! I love 91-92 Z28's and GTA's, but if I had to pick a thirgen it would be a Firebird. The Fastest Thirdgen's are Firebirds. (TTA and Firehawk)

Doesn't the name "Camaro" come from a french word or something? I like the name "Firebird" better; it describes America better (rising from the ashes and such). By the way, Mark, I've personally seen more girls driving V6 Camaros than Trans Ams around here; your experience maybe different... Both are awesome cars; I'm with whoever said "one of each"!

What I like:

Camaro
Exterior especially the front. I love the quad lights and the recessed fog lights.

Firebird
Interior. There are less sharp edges. A case in point is the centre console.

What I do not like:

Camaro
Yellow interior labeling.

Firebird
Heavy Areo Spoiler. Looks great but wears out the hatch struts.

Even though my car is for sale, I know it will not be my one and only 3rd gen. I would love to buy a Camaro (post 85) and integrate the Firebird's strenghts into it, or vice versa.

Buy the way, is there anyone who can distinctly feel the difference a GTA or TA has on cornering and driveability due to its increased weight?

Also, they say that the aerodynamics on either car promotes rust.

The Camaro interior lettering was only that color 91-92.

Me, I like 82-84 Z28's and 85-87 IROC-Z's the best. I think some Firebirds are OK, for instance the 84 TA and 87-89 Formula.

Thats good to see IROCZ! Both f-bodies worked well for each other and the fact that the 84 WS6 paved the way for the z rated tires and the LE1 breaks(not sure that this came out right) It's already been said here but the best f-body would be a mesh and would be THE f body They would call it the IROC Trans Am ahh oh wait they did do that.... it was a firebird too... let me scratch my chin and I'll wite back (By the way the IROC T/A was BAD A$$) I don't like the 4th gens but that thing was a beautful BEAST!:hail:

The true f body

What?? Dude, I'm sure Z rated tires started in 85 on IROC-Z's. 1LE's didn't start until 88 for both cars.

IROC TA?? Never heard of that, it wasn't production if they made 1, and that wouldn't be a blend if it was a Firebird now would it. Heh heh. I would never like a blended F-Body, it wouldn't be right, both cars have different personalites and agendas. Some Firebirds might have a more "luxorious" int. but I don't like the way it looks. I just like the Camaros int. better. I just like Camaros better and everything about them!!

its weird, out of all the generations,i like firebirds more than camaros except third generation.I think in the third gen firebirds unless you get a trans am/gta then they just dont look tough at all, where as the camaros look tough even if you get an SC.My dream car is a 1970 formula 400 ram air III 4 speed.Just my 2 cents.
