Need help from everyone with t-tops

So heres what I'm trying to do:

Can everyone with t-tops list what year their car is, that kind of tops (acrylic or glass) and what kind of pins (latch, small, or wrapped in plastic) It seems that no one has a deffinant anwser to the questions that come up about t-tops and fitting into other cars. This way we can try to peice together what will fit on what.

Okay went out and took a quick look.
1991 Firebird
I suppose it fits the category "wrapped in plastic".
There is a plastic bushing around the metal pin. It snugs in, and the pin goes into the channel.

Yes. Exactly. The plastic is around the pin.
They are Lexans.
It is used more like a guide I believe to line it up better with the holes.

I have a 91 RS and i have T-tops. My Tops are both different. The Drivers Side is acrylic and pass. is Glass. I have problems with the Pass. side leaking in the rain so i think it could be because of that. I JUST bought a set of glass tops for 20 bucks. Perfect condition and fit but they dont seal very well. I am thinking of changing the seals or maybe selling them. Hope that helps.

My 1982 Z-28 has the hook style glass tops.
I believe 82-83 ( possibly 84) factory T's had the hook style.
I know that my 85 RS had locking pin style glass tops.

A friend of mine has a 1983 Z-28 with the dealer installed T's and they are about 3 1/2" shorter (front to back).

I don't know what year they offered acrylic tops.

My 92 came with the lexon tops with plastic pins, I replaced them with 88 or 89 glass tops with metal pins. They work but I had to adjust the mounts lower to hold the tops down tighter. My lexon tops didnt leak at all, the glass tops leak under alot of water pressure.
Does the mounting hardware for the metal pins and the plastic coated pins mount the same on the camaros? If they do I need the mounting hardware for the metal pins. Anybody got some?

89 rs T-tops , glass. It looks like a plastic pin. Its round with a beveled edge that goes into like a socket. Kind of like the tip of a IAC motor.

My 92 RS came with the Lexan tops with plastic sleeved pins.
The coating is totally cracked from twist/flexing.Looks like you're looking through spiderwebs.
Recently picked up a pair of earlier glass tops in great condition for $20 at swap meet.
Plan on swapping the hardware over to the glass ones soon.

jim adjusting is easy,

drop the trim pieces from around the hole in the body,

then take a 7mm nutdriver and adjust up & down accordingly. The adjusters are like a "dual cam" to best describe it...

once you look at it you will see the slots and figure it out...

They don't leak but they rattle so much they drive me insane. It's right at the hook on the driver's side and the handle on the pass. side. Any suggestions to make it shut up?

Absolom,
I might suggest replacing them with the pin style from 84+, go to your favorite salvageyard, and see if they have any broken T's, it MIGHT be possible to replace the hardware. You will also obviously have to replace the hardware on the car too....

it might help...

I was pretty sure you could adjust the early "hook" style t's too.

Chances are your tops are Glass, unless someone changed them to acrylic.

The quickest & easiest way to teoll is to look at your tops. When you pull your tops off if there is a metal strip on the front and back of the top then you have the acrylic.

Typically the acrylic tops also have a tendancy to look cracked with what looks like a spiderweb cracks. that is called crazing, and is common with acrylic with age.

hope that helps

Anyone have a picture of the pin style vs. the hook style? I realize it should explain itself but I would like to see what the difference really is.

okfoz - I tried to fix the hook mechinisim this weekend only to find that I would need something to press the rivit-like pins that join the hook to the rest of the mechinism. Seems these get loose over time. Would a set of new T's with pins fit right if I were to just replace my T-tops? If I can just replace the latching portion, I have no idea how that separates from the glass.

Thanks for the help

never done it, I have seen the earlier style T-tops with the later style glass but I really do not know....

If your wondering what I am talking about is on the early glass they painted only portions of the glass, whereas on the later models there was more paint. for example. On the later styles, like on my 87, the paint was on all the edges, on my 83, the paint was just on the outside (by the handle) it did not go all the way around...

I had the metal pins in before, but I (the dumba$$) forgot to lock the pass on day and well going 60 down the highway, you get the picture... I now have ones from an '88 IROC w/ the Plastic around the pins, It still bolts in, but now they leak They both were glass.

To the best of my knowledge, heres the facts: (correct me if I am wrong!)

82-84 Glass Tops, Hook Style Pin
85-90 Glass Tops, Metal Pins
91-92 Lexan (aka Ackrlic), Plastic Wrapped

I think all came w/ locks and as far as glass w/ plastic wrapped pins I dunno...
