There is a local Formula that is running around with a spoiler like that. I cringe every time I see it because it looks so hideous.

Before this joker got ahold of it, I looked at the car, it was overpriced, had a 350 but it was smashed, has a T/A hood with the vents. It was someone's bad dream.

people liked it enough, that GM made the T/A's....if the firebird was a flop, the t/a would have never existed, correct? I don't want to be rude or start any fights, just saying what I understand the situation to be. I just think you guys don't give the base models enough credit, (ya wouldn't think this has anything to do with owning a "base" model, would it?)

what are ricers? I've read lots of references to rice, but have never heard of it. Except for the grainy stuff you make chinese food with! Probably cos I'm a Brit and it's an American term or something.

You may just be joking about the hack job the guy did but I have seen the guys website and it had more pictures of the project. He built a dual axle for the back and it showed how he modified the rear too. I wish I had the web address to show you. But this was a long time ago and I don't know if it is still posted on the web.

In 1989 Chevy made a concept truck out of an IROC...
Heres a site with a few pics

The site says it's an '88, but this is what the book "Cars Detroit Never Built - Fifty years of American experimental cars" says about it:

"Here Chevrolet took an IROC Camaro and put a pickup bed on it. The result : a neat little streamlined utility vehicle. Powered by a 360 hp 4.5L Trans-am racing V-6 engine, and boasting a Corvette
suspension, it pushed along from zero-to-60 in 6.0 seconds, a hot performer for a small truck. Officially, "XT-2" stood for "Experimental Truck #2" (The first was the Blazer XT-1)
Given the consumer shift to small, sporty trucks, the evolution of the Chevrolet XT-2 Pace Truck was natural. Up front, the aerodynamic windshield was also the hood. The entire engine was located under the windshield, which pivoted up on gas struts for easy engine servicing. Special space-age materials insulated the cockpit from engine heat. Why the hell would you f*ck up a third gen like that? Or any car for that matter? I can't stand it when people put those tinny tires on them. There must be something really wrong with someones head that does stuff like that.

There was a guy at the TA Nats with a very nicely done TA/El Camino....it had two rear axles like the photoshopped one. The front axle was original, the second was from a FWD Transport minivan. The car was very well done, and probably was built out of a nice car that got smacked in the rear. I don't personally care for it, but this one looked like it could have been a factory job. It was red, and had 6 of the red GTA wheels on it. I'll see if Shannon got any pics of it...somebody here had to have seen it.

About 10 years ago, there was an El Camino with a Camaro Front Clip on it, actually looked pretty good. Saw it at St Ignace... Anyway, I do not know how hard it would be to put a Firebird Front clip on an Elcamino, but you could call it the El Firebirdo...

actually crazy.....pretty much all the sletches and things involved lowering and big-inch wheels....i like some of the minitrucks out there, and want to contribute something different to the scene.....the car wouldn't lose anything performance or drivability-wise except the pasenger area in the back. too bad te car isn't worth doing that too. look at the idea as a reverse notchback...if that makes you feel better. someday..................

I actually thought your idea was cool. But then everyone started posting pics of all kinda crazy stuff and I didnt know what to type.

I think stuff like that (converting a car to a truck) is cool. It dosnt always turn out how people imagined, but sometimes it does come out good. I think if you tried it and took your time it could come out nice. I have seen some projects like this and they turned out very very cool. One of a kind too. The thing that would make it different is that it still a car underneath. Still has car suspension and the like, but looks like a truck. Most of the crazy car-to-truck conversions I see involve people cutting two vehicles in 1/2 and somehow malforming them together into some sorta freak show. I think if you kept the 3rd gen base and did it tastefully it might turn out nice.

I've seen crazy conversions like this in Japan, and honestly if those were production vehicles I would try to buy one. If anyone ever wants to see it, look for Option Video #72. They took a Japan spec Nissan Skyline R32 and converted it to a truck. It still had all the Skyline drivetrain and engine, but it looked like a truck. And to see it drifting turns like crazy was awesome. Looked and performed way better than todays 'sport trucks'. They also did the conversion to a Nissan 180 sx (240 sx here in the US) and I thought that looked awesome too. I'll try to find a pic. I know alot of guys here wont like it (they'll call it rice since its based off a Japanese car), but just to show you what I mean ....

 

Wow I somehow found a pic of the 180sx truck conversion I was talking about earlier. Its a pic that someone took while they were visiting Japan so its not that good. Bad angle and the bed is filled with stuff but here ya go:

Thats the one I was talking about...I don't care for it, but it was very well done. Looks like the pic was taken at the Tipp City Cruise...that's Redraif's car behind it.

 

Oh yeah, I have videos of that car and others like it drifting, neat stuff.

 

While I might say any of these ideas would look ugly to me, if someone here could actually pull it off themselves, and have a photo-by-photo "story" of the work, I'd be damn impressed.

 

looking at the El Camaro that 89 Firechicken posted, it looks to me that the car is basically a Stock El Camino with some ground effects and a differnt nose piece... It does NOT appear to be the front clip from a Camaro, the slant is to steep from the angle shown to be a stock Camaro nose...

I think the major downfall for a conversion like this is that whoever does it usually plans to make the bed as big as a real truck. All the successfull (or what I consider succesfull) truck conversions I've seen dont have a bed anywhere near the size of a real truck. And thats how I think it should be. I dont think that anyone who would convert a sports car into a truck would want to haul bricks or wood around town. Its mostly for the cool factor. You can still put stuff in the back and it'll look like a truck .... but going for too much bed space can make the project looked messed up.

Also, be sure to re-inforce the fame of the car (sub frames and a rollcage for sure) if you do something like this. I'm no expert on stuff like this, but doing a tuck conversion could really weaken the strength of the chassis. Well I think so anyway lol

Lauren Engineering has a Camaro and Monte Carlo SS front clip for an El-Camino! Much easier and saves the poor 3rd gen

 

You make jokes. However it did happen. There were 2 prototype wagon thirdgens. I think they were made in 1987. I have pics of them somewhere.

 

I was under the impression that GM made the El Camino SS around 85 or 86 as a production vehicle, not an aftermarket change over.....following the Monte Carlo SS's and such...same front ends, just adding the style and flair trying to keep the Elkies alive...didn't work, they died out in 87......or maybe I'm just dead wrong.....
