F body pickup, do i dare to build it?

i was hella bored, so i busted out the sketch pad and pencil and sketched a few doodles, one thing led to another and i have a prototype of an 84 firebird pickup. It looks sweet on paper, and hopefully i can scan it and post it soon! sound like a good idea? looks like a mini truck but remove the hatch, weld in a back window setup from an s10 or something like it, i think i could do it with lots of time, but should i? Also keep in mind i have an extra parts firebird in the back yard that will get tossed eventually.

considering the location of the fuel tank, and if you have no intentions to move it. I can see a whole 8 inches of depth for the bed.

more seriously, to me it sounds like a waste of a perfectly good firebird and your time, though I'd really like to see your design before I reject the idea completly....
Truthfully its a waste of a good Fbody & if u want to do something like this... try to get an EL Camino & the front of a junked bird.... it'll make your life much better & u have the good bird left to show off with.

That would be almost as bad as the guy around here that turned a perfectly good 65 Mustang into a truck. Don't get me wrong, it was done very well, and looked stock (i think he used the back end of a falcon/ranchero), but to cut up a cherry Mustang like that....it's just plain wrong! Same as with an f-body.

I remember a while back someone had a link of a guy who turned his firebird into a pickup truck. It was pretty gross.. good waste of a third gen. Maybe someone will remember what I'm talking about and post a pic.

Dont ruin a good third gen, get an el camino or an S-10.

It's not like he's cutting up a pristine TTA here, guys. I still think it's a waste of time (like that kid in my town who lifted a station wagon), but what the hell, do whatever you want.

Actually there is a company that makes a replacment rear hatch that turns it into an elky. Its made of fiberglass and bolts on. I remember it from Car Craft or Chevy Hi-Performance a few years ago. I remember It looked pretty good IMHO.

Exactly! He'll be cutting up an '84 Firebird not something like a GTA,Formula, or A Firehawk.Just a Firebird.I think that I saw the same article or ad that Prime had seen. They took off the rear hatch and interior panels and inserted a fiberglass bed and a window in that area's place. It looked ok to me but it's more form than function though.

Bill,
that's...umm...different.

Actually it looks like the rear was lengthened about 6" I also noticed that it looks like they removed the rear side markers...

I think its definately for those people who say, "I NEED a truck, but I will only buy a Trans Am..."

I think the car is done "ok" But from what I can see it looks a little hacked up.

Definately not a show stopper.

That's not what I was talking about but anyway that looks like crap. The one I was talking about was done by an aftermarket company.Like I said in my previous post this company sells a truck bed box and rear window that fits in place of the hatch and the interior panels back there.

That red GTA wagon is different. I wouldn't do that to it myself but for someone that wants it- its tastefully done IMO

I just don't like that back window glass. It looks too much like the back of a pickup cap. :nono:

The Red GTA station wagon, believe it or not, was originally a GM (Pontiac) concept vehicle, thats been done to Vette's and even 4th Gens.

A kid in my town once took the back hatch window off his Berlinetta as a joke. He called his car the "El Camaro". It just looked funny. I know they make IROC-style noses for the El Camino, but I've never seen one with a Firebird nose. As for that pic of the Firebird pickup, file that next to that 6-wheeler 'Bird. Wierd, man!

I'm not putting them all down.I mean they're not really worth anything right now,it's an '84.There were a lot made so it's not like that's the last one or the most desirable model. Not every single kind of 3rdgen is something special.

just a firebird?
If it wasn't for the base model firebird there would be no (higher end model cars....T/As, GTAs, TTAs, etc...) and then you'd all be driving base models...

back before my time (the 70s & early 80s), I can imagine people thought the same way about the 1st gens, but would you even think about cutting one up now? I don't think our 3rd Gens will ever have 1st gen status.....but we shouldn't just tear them apart because we are bored (and are likely to quit the project 1/2 way through)...if one was to make an attempt at this conversion, they should do it because they want too....just something for you all to think about.

I would not be against making the Firebird into a "truck" as long as it was done well....we don't need anymore trashed up, torn-apart 3rd gens on the roads....

That's not at all what I was saying dude!

Oh jeeze,ya'll are acting like he was cutting up a 1stgen Firebird or a Lamborghini. Oh yes,all firebirds are crap,1st,2nd,3rd and 4ths.That's exactly what I was saying so do what you want with them. You totally misunderstood what I said.
