How does this hood modification sound?
I want to put a ram air/cowl hood on my Z28( similar to the one in the Thunder Racing ad above). It looks good and good looks are nice to have on a car. My dad presented a new idea to me. Im sure everyone has seen a 2ND generation Firebird Trans Am at one point in their life. If you have then you are aware of the shaker hood scoop they have on them. My dad thinks that the shaker hood scoop would look good on my 84 Z28. Im not sure though. Let me know what you all think of this idea
Thanks Drew

Not really what you're looking for, but this is the hood mod I am having done when I get my car painted. If the hood shaker your talking bout is what I think it is, this kinda looks like that. This is an ss hood. Stripe will be black by the way

That car in the TR ad is Brad's,he's on this board.
DISTURBthePEACE I was wondering about the skull and cross bones plate that you have on your car.I've seen that plate on several cars and wondered why or if it meant anything, just curious.
they sell that tag at autozones around here, and that isnt the hood he is talking about, i know what you mean, the scoop stays on the breather when youlift the hood right? yeah i saw a red 3rd gen around here the other day with it, go for it those things are cool man

Bandit II's & some Pro Ams I've seen recieved 'shaker' hoods. I've never looked/seen one close enough to see if they were truely functional though.

I dont think the Pro AM one was functional. I know it was functional on the second generation ones. Yeah that skull and crossbones plate is everywhere down here. My dad put one on the front of my mom's Caddy. It stands out on that car just a little, kinda makes ya look twice.
Drew
By the way , I know this isnt really the place to post this but, I have a Trans AM hood (3rd gen) that I want to sell If anyone needs just let me know

:lala: I went to my local junkyard and bought the entire shaker ***'y for a TA and put it on my 89 convertible, it looks great! The trick is in cutting the hole in the hood. Trace the opening from the shaker hood of a 2nd gen T/A (that's the easy part) Now when you go to copy it onto your hood make sure its far forward enough to clear the distributer when it's mounted! Now, you have to cut the hole. Putting a hole in a perfectly good hood takes a bit of nerve. I drilled a pilot hole and cut the hood with a jig saw (do a neat job cause you will need the piece later. You'll need to cut the underhood frame back from the opening another 3/4 of an inch (use a cut off wheel it does a neat job). That piece you cut out of the hood? pry the piece of underhood frame that's glued to it off and put it in a safe place. The shaker scoop mounts to the air cleaner so again you have to modify it. I found that by taking the stock air cleaner cover and cutting it at the 45 degree angle where it goes down to meet the base you have the basic parts you'll need for making the shaker mount on a small block.
Part II : Making it fit.
Pry the steel mounting plate off the bottom of the fiberglass scoop, your gonna fasten the cut out piece from the hood instead! Put the bottom of your old air cleaner on the engine put the "ring" that you have from the top on top of it, now place the sheetmetal you cut out of the hood on that and theshaker on that. Carefully close the hood and line up your scoop, open the hood and mark where the ring meets the sheet metal and where the sheet metal hits the scoop. Cut the circle out of the sheetmetal and fasten it to the ring (I welded this) now join the sheet metal to the scoop; a couple of rivits and some caulk does it. I cut the back out of the scoop and mounted secondaries off two carbuerators spring loaded to make the scoop functional. Piece of cake!

Looks good so far doesnt seem as complicated as I thought. Keep me posted. I have got to find the shaker hoos soon because I am going to start painting my car sometime next week ( mostly just preping it for paint.

Finished product? That may be a while, I'm in the process of dropping in a new motor, guess I might as well throw that pic in too. It's not complicated to make as a matter of fact after buying the whole shaker from the junk yard I realized the only part I needed to buy was the fiberglass scoop. You can get a brand new ready for paint shaker scoop from JC Whitney! Of course making it functional takes some more work but I've seen lots of them on 2nd gen T/A's with the back of the scoop left open. Anyway heres where the car is at today.
