will this console fit into my 1987 T/A with minimal customizing? It is from an 1998 T/A auto

Actually,it will bolt in. You will however have to use a 6 speed shifter plate instead of the auto due to the height of the 87 shifter. If you have power windows or mirrors you will have to fab up some sort of mount for them. I have one from a 95 in my 90 Formula and it slid right in place. I used the ashtray area for my window switches and just tucked away the mirror control for now.

Which fourth gen console would work best with my car? I don't feel like having to do alot of customizing.

Well, would you rather have three cupholders or one? They both should fit with little hassle but I've been told that the single version is slightly easier. Just remember to use the 6 speed top shifter plate.
