Automatic shifter plastic strip

Does anyone know of a supplier for the ribbed, black-plastic, sliding strip that moves in the automatic console (91 RS but on others as well)?

I called the dealer and the whole assembly is available (about $70) but this seems ridiculous.

Am I resigned to canabilizing junkyard cars?

Nope. If yours broke as mine did you can put some clear tape on it to mend it. Actually it was the yellow plastic strip that I mended on mine. That worked for a few years until I did my T5 swap. Otherwise you'll have to buy the entire shifter plate.

I'll have to look for some more serious tape, thanks. I thought I might be able to get by with black electrical tape but that lasted for only a couple shifts.

My wife and I did go to the wrecking yard but noticed that different years had different designs. Some appeared to have a leather/vinyl boot covering the opening (I'm fairly sure it was an automatic as well.). There was a 91 that had the part but the yard wouldn't let us remove anything off that car.

Try fiber reinforced packaging tape on the backside. It has a very sticky adhesive and is super strong. Just clean it forst with alcohol. You may have to use a black permanent marker or spray it satin black with a can if any white shows through. Lon
