splicing 2 bent hoods together
splicing 2 bent hoods together
I have a busted up formula hood and I found another one in the junkyard. tough to find a good one around here. would it be hard to cut a corner off one hood and use it to replace part of the other one? I was thinking just some welding and grinding and it would be good as new?

i dont know if that would a good idea or not, yeah it could be done, but you would have to be really careful lining everything up, and would have to go really slow spot welding it because the hood is sure to warp. just my .02
I would have to cut a 1' x 2' corner. I figure with 2 edges lining it up would be easier.
people replaced their 1/4 panels and stuff this would be similar right? I got a miller mig welder that should be able to handle it. I might do it just so I can experiment a bit.

yes it would be similar to a quarter panel, again alingment and not getting the metal hot is the two important things because the heat will warp it because the metal on the hood is thin and the area is so large. it should work if you go slow. good luck.

hoods have inner and outer panels, so you've got a lot of work ahead of you to make it look right. Plus, hoods are subject to a ton of vibration & heat cycles, and the fact that people open and close them isn't helping anything. Hoods are one of those body panels that usually need to be replaced for all but the most minor repairs. If you use anything thicker than a skim coat of filler, it'll crack. Unless you know how to lead body panels, I'd just cough up the $150 for a used hood.
Oh yeah... and if you can weld that hood without warping the outer sheet metal, you're my hero.

the bent part is on the driver's rear side of the hood where the hinges go so don't think fiberglass would hold up. I was just looking for a cheap way to get a formula hood until I have enough $$$ for a fiberglass one. also I want to practice sanding down and painting for when I do the whole car. right now I got a trans am hood on the car it looks too "pointy" in the middle. maybe I'll get pictures of the hoods.
