Sanding off paint

Around my T-tops all the paint is peeling down to my quarter panels. I need to sand all the paint off. What grit should I use? Also what sort of tool should I use to do this?

I would recomend 80 grit and a jitterbug. It takes paint off pretty quick.

Yeah, either a Jitterbug or a DA would do the trick

Yeah....a DA.....It stands for "Dual Action" Sander. Most autobody men use these to sand down paint and to feather in bondo. They come in 5 inch 6 inch or 8 inch. They are REALLY great. You can pick them up for pretty cheap. About $50..00 from autozone. They are ran by an aircompressor.

Sucks for me, I don't have an air compressor. Would one of those sanding wheels work that goes on a drill?

If you used one of those sanding wheels on a drill......it would tear the paint up way to much and scratch it to pieces..........a drill dosen't have enough RPM to sand it smooth like a DA or Jitterbug.

I've used a orbital sander (electric black and decker) before to prep/strip the paint, it works ok. You will need to stick with something finer than 80 grit though, like 200 or better, and take your time. Otherwise you will leave scratches in the metal. If you have never preped a car for paint before, you may want to do it by hand. You will reduce any scratches that you could get. If you could get access to a air compressor it will give you the best result. You could always go with a chemical striper, just prep and prime the surface asap. You will need to sand before priming, but not as much. But it will also destory your seals if you get it on them.

You can pay ALOT of money for one of these DA's......but....you can get a cheap on at autozone like I said for around $50.00 I think. Even though it's a cheaper brand....it will work just as good and will get the job done.
