plexiglass or lexan

anyone know of any companies that make a plexiglass or lexan rear window for an 84 firebird? i realize that i will lose some of the weight transfer with a lighter window, but im going for weight savings and will deal with the traction problem, when it arizes. thanks in advance

is there any certain reason you want to replace your rear window w/ plexi/lexan? Unless you are building strictly a race car, having it on a street car is pointless...it stratches way too easy and can only fix it by replacing it. There are a bunch of other things you can get rid of to save even more weight than what you'd get from the rear window.

Put to answer your question...no I don't know of any companies that manufacture lexan rear windows

I got a Car&Driver article from 83-84 that has a polycarbonite rear window they used on a 83 T/A project car but all it gives for a source is Cope Plastic and no part #.

Hope that helps some.

Polycarbonate - AKA Lexan, Very light, is virtually unbreakable, very strong shoot builts through it will not crack (unless aged) . Scratches by simply looking at it. has a life span of about 20 or so years, all depends on exposure to levels of UV (sunlight)

Acrylic - AKA plexiglas/Polycast Very light, tough, but is notch sensitive, can break. Does not scratch as easy, but needs proper care for longevity. (has life span of about 20 or so years) all depends on exposure to levels of UV (sunlight).

You could probably use either for street use, but both are impractical. Because Acrylic & Polycarbonate is more flexable than Glass, Your hatch WILL leak, when you drive in the rain, or going through any kind of car wash. Some of our T-tops were made of Acrylic, so i would not see a problem with the hatch on the street.

Who has them? I have seen them but do not know where. ALTHOUGH, I might eventualy begin to make them, (already got a mold)

John

i am planning on removing as much weight as possible. plans call for a fiberglass front clip, plexiglass or lexan windows, and windshield(all of which except rear window have been found), and interior is already stripped down to bare metal. it is basically going to be a bracket racer with occasional street driving. and if you dont have any info for me, dont criticise my plans.

Have you read the shredding pounds tech article on the main site????

They may help you out......in which it would be more practical/performence wise.....

Such as a lightweight hood, remove smog/spare tire and jack.....
