cleaning filthy interior plastics

Does anyone have good advice for cleaning filthy plastic interior parts, like the armrests. The former owner was a mechanic and my light grey interior has nasty black grease. A lot of it is in the pores of the plastic. Just wondering if any cleaners are good for this.

When i detail i must say that purple muscle ROCKS.....very good at getting that stuff off. Try one of those kitchen no scratch brillo pad thingies while using the purple muscle.....it should get grease right out....have fun

For general cleaning I use window cleaner. It cuts the dirt w/o being too strong. Fantastic and 409 are great, but they are strong enough to take some color off the plastic. To get the dirt out of the crevises, apply cleaner, then scrub gently with an old toothbrush.

FYI: I just found that even window cleaner can be too strong around the dash. It dissolves the ink used to print the labels on things like window buttons, windshield wiper controls, etc. I also hear that cleaners with ammonia can make the clear plastic on the dash and radio cloudy, so just use water or dust with a very soft brush.

That Greased Lightning stuff is bad ***...also Purple Power is good stuff too...just read the back of the bottle. I've used that Purple Power stuff all over and it just dissolves all sorts of grimey stuff...I've used it at home too not just on the car.

I agree with the above. Stay away from Buttons with printing. Greased lightning and purple Power work well also. They are very strong though. Apply and scrub with a tooth brush. They will strip the grease and old silicone products.

When you are done cleaning, the surfaces will be dull. I recomend using Black Magic to restore the luster and to provide protection. Its the best stuff I have ever found for protection. Original dashpad has never cracked and the car is an 87.

Thanks for all the ideas. I didn't expect all the replies. If I can get rid of the grime my interior will look much more respectable.
