Center armrest cover

Hey all

My armrest glove box cover broke off and I have not been using it, but prefer to not pay GM prices for a replacement. Can these be had at good prices elsewhere, and has this happened to any other third gen owners?

It appears that the 'spring loaded' metal attachment arm that supplies the positioning of the lid is what caused it to break, it's too tight (at least that's my impression having used only the one in my car)

there are a few aftermarket ones out there but they are very expensive just for the lid (around $160.00 or so), when I was looking for mine I found that by paying an extra $80.00 I could buy an entire console (base and lid) which I was in need of anyway. or you could just swap in a fourth gen console from a bone yard which can be found in great condition and alot cheaper, plus, you can get them with drink holders also, an option the third gen designers forgot.

Both of mine have broken. That spring that holds the cover down is way to strong. One ripped out a part of the top cover. Both have had the screws come out do to the plastic inside breaking!

Hi guys!

Thanx for the replies but their site says this about the rest cover that looks like mine:
Console Cover 1970-1981
Firebird, Console Cover $15.95

My car is a 1989 Formula. The four gen console swap sounds interesting, but not sure I want to mod the car that way. I may well need new seats at some point as the cloth has gotten it's share of rain due to the top down nature of my car.

All upcoming projects, no rush. I do have my cover sitting in my apartment, and originally I left it loose on the console... amusing, but a bummer none the less.

if you guys read the description on "dash covers" site you will find that what they sell is an overlay cover that glues on your old lid. it is not a replacement lid. they also sell the plastic covers that glue over your existing dash pads to make them "look" new. if your lid has broken hinges or other structural problems then this product won't fix them, it is mearly cosmetic. plus the overlay in question looks like a cover that fits camaros, the "bird" lids are much different from the camaros.

be carefull what you buy and check it out good first.

That ain't it...too wide. It could be the cover, and I suspected they might be, but not enough info and pics of them.
I have no immediate need, but was glad to hear I'm not alone. Any solution to taking pressure off the lid arm?
It is just too strong!
