Reducing door weight.

Hi guys, just wondering what I can do to reduce the weight on my 92 RS's doors. It already has manual windows and door locks.

Doh, just noticed I posted this on the wrong board

You could cut the crash bars out of the doors, that will knock off prob 10-15 lbs total, but I'd only do it on a car that has a rollcage. Its not safe otherwise. Still safer than fiberglass doors though.

Make some carbon fibre doors. Now that would rock!

if you will be on the street with traffic ever than i would be strongly against it....

if it's for racing applications...............you'd already know.

i could tell you how to do it; but i don't want to be in anyway responsible for your well being.

the info is out there if it's a must...

So are headlight covers and strobe lights, nothing to do with racing..........lol.......lol.....i know what you meant though.....

Chopping apart the doors to save weight or replacing them with fiberglass will help loose weight.........BUT you are messing with an essential part of the body when it comes to safete....

I know if i get T-boned, I'm gonna be :hail: :hail: the heavy doors........I know fiberglass wouldn't hold up for shyt in an accident......and if you cut it up, then the same thing.......

Going fast is fun, but not that the expense of one's life.........You want to loose weight.......follow the tech articles, get a fiberglass hood, remove a spoiler, gut the interior, do something other then taking all the safety precautions off......

Unless it's a racing application..........

A former coworker of mine cut his out of his drag car...used a cutoff wheel and lots of patience! There's not a whole lot of room in there.

personally for racing there is no replacement for fiberglass or custom carbon fiber peices..

i saw a young kid with carbon fiber front end (fenders, hood, front facia) and doors get hit by a small suv. the damn thing exploded into a million peices and the kid is now seriously disabled. if he would have had the stock car he might have had a bent fender or a broken headlight..

point: unless your racing your asking for trouble.......if you don't care that's one thing. but at least let people who ride with you know.

there was an accident around here not to long ago where a guy was racing with his girl.......typical stoplight stuff, anyway he wrecked and died. his girl is now very messed up.

rather than turn this into what it may become i'll stop. just please don't do it for a car that is driven on the street.

bjm323, look into the replacement doors. they are available and can be made easy if they aren't at the time of need. major weight reduction compared to cutting up the stock doors as well as rather inexpensive when considered what goes into the setup.

It has to be an all steel car except for the hood can be fiberglass. So, I have to get as much weight I can out of the steel doors. Also, have to keep all the glass in the car. As far as the safety concerns go, I think I am pretty well protected in my car with a 12pt. cage not to mention a funny car cage option.
