Well....I'd like to see some of those too if you have some. Did you install the shifter yourself? I'm more of a body guy and haven't done many things like this.......how hard is it?
I just did a search on how the installation was on the B&M Mega Shifter.....people are saying to use the cable the kit comes with and some peole are saying to use the one in your car (I'd rather do that) and then some people are saying to cut brackets.....welding things....and all of this. I want to be able to do this myself without messing anything up.......so.....do I have to use the cable the kit comes with? Do I have to cut brackets and use a welder??? (I hope not).....anyone have any info on this??

B&M will give you good instructions. I didn't weld anything. I used the cable that came with the shifter and it works good. You will have to cut your shifter plate but that really is no big deal. I thought the install was pretty straight forward and easy.

I've been using the supplied cable for a few years without any problems.
Does anybody have any close up shots of there B&M Mega Shifter?
Supreme Member
Yeah I installed mine myself too. Pretty straight forward. Even used the cable that came with it and havn't had any problems. Let me see if I can find the pics.

Ok.....for the guys that have used there stock shift cable.....what kind of modifications did you have to do in order for it to work properly? And do you have to take the whole floor console out?? Were any of the electronics hard to hook up....or pretty self explanitory? Sorry to ask all of these questions.....but I'm not much of a mechanic....more of a paint and body guy....I just don't want to mess my car up......

I love the shifter but B&M does have some problems with it. I guess there’s some reason why you don’t want to but I would seriously consider using the shift cable that comes with it. It’s probably better quality than stock. The instructions are quite simple; the only electrical parts to it are the reverse light turn on switch and the light for the gear indicator. They are really simple and I’m sure you will have no trouble there. The only problems you will have are: you have to cut the bracket, that’s not bad once you figure out where, and the top plate is smaller than the one on the stock shifter, it doesn’t line up quite right. Overall it takes a little while to install but I think it’s worth it. Good luck

I would tell you to keep one of those $40 cables handy. I had mine break on me in the drive through of a jack in the box earlier this year. My friend shifted the car from under it ( don't know how, but he did) and I had to drive home in 1st the whole way. Otherwise, I would call them reliable.

i don't see how the cable would break unless it was installed improperly as it's a pretty straight forward device. if their was to much tension then i could see it.......although stranger things have happened.
i know the install took me roughly a day only because i adapted the relay that you have to purchase seprately into the stock harness so that if the shifter were to ever be removed i could replace it to stock form with ease. they recomend just cutting it and splicing. the worst of the ordeal was the difficulty of getting the shifter in and out of gear for a day or so...after it loosened up and is extremely easy. i like mine alot!

The cable did not severe completely, the plastic around it frayed however and the cable inside was exposed. You'll see how it happens when it happens to you. Just remember that cable one day if you find yourself unable to shift.

it was really easy heres a pic, if you want, i can send you a pic of under the console, to see, also not mentioned earlier, the neutral safety switch. it is easy too.
Supreme Member
that could very well happen then, especially if it was near any parts that could cut into it. i always check mine before i remove the car from storage and when i put it away....thankfully no problems yet.

You guys have some REALLY nice looking shifters! Well...I went to the shop where I get most of my mods done.....they said they would charge me betweet $100-$150 to install it!!! Thats pretty expensive..! I just stiil not sure I'm cut out for this kind of job....but..please keep posting your pictures and thoughts of installing the B&M Mega Shifter....
So......does the WHOLE console have to come out while installing the B&M set-up??? That would suck if it does....

No. You can install it after only removing the upper cover plate. It gets a bit tricky because the console is in the way once you've bolted the shifter down, and it would be infinitely easier if the console was out of the way.So......does the WHOLE console have to come out while installing the B&M set-up???
I have one tip: you do have to cut the stock console plate to make room for the shifter. Use a cutoff wheel, not a recipricating saw. I'm sure you can guess how I know, but let's just say I've installed two of these shifters and the second time went much smoother and has had no problems to date. If anything goes awry, it's about 75% installation issues, and 25% design issues. If you look at some of my old posts about the B&M shifter, I do go into detail on some of the design issues, but the rest shouldn't have been a problem if it was installed correctly in the first place.
good luck

I installed the B&M Megashifter in my Formula about 2 years ago...I got it as an early christmas gift, because my wife broke my stock shifter cable, so I installed it that night at the shop I was working it....The model I had was the Universal Kit....I wasnt aware of the 3rd gen kit they had, so I went with it...It took a lot of work, and I actually took a couple of the mounting pieces off the old shifter and welded them up so it would bolt right in.
I actually really like it.
But be careful when routing the shifter cable...Mine was a little tight right where it passed through the tranny tunnel and broke once on me right at the shifter After I replaced the cable I just rerouted it and tied it out of the way. Havent had a problem since.
Also, how did some other people hook up the Reverse and Neutral Safety Switch?
When I did mine, I could just pull the shifter sideways a bit, and the reverse light would stay on reguardless of what gear I was in.

dont have any shop install it. it is very easy. ive never done a shifter before mine and it was wasy for me. i didnt have to weld anything. i did pull out the whole console, which is easy. it takes like 5 minutes to do. there is like 4 bolts holding it in there. the whole installation will go faster with it out. the time it takes to pull the console is faster than messing around with it in. i will see if i can get some pictures to you with the upper console off.
Trans am 86, those are some nice seats, where did you get them at, and how much were they?

i just put one in abot a month ago and i have't had any problems with it, yet. it is a very easy job. i would take the console out ( replaced that too because some thieves messed the old one up after taking my CD player). the console comes out very easy. if you don't take it out i hope you have small hands. make sure you jack the car up to have enough room to get under it. last thing, buy a Dremal tool. i think everybody should have one...i have 2 of them.

I would upgrade to the hammer handle, steel thread insert and easier to shift IMO.

If you do a search in the trans/drivetrain forum, you'll find a ton of messages about all these. Basically, with the megashifter, there's no button to push to change gears. Say you want to go from 4th (overdrive) into 3rd (drive). You pull the stick back- it downshifts- and let go of the stick- the stick snaps upright again. To go into 2nd, you slap the stick backwards- the trans goes into 2nd, let go of the stick, the stick snaps upright again. To go up to 4th gear, smack the stick forward, release, smack the stick forward again, and you're in 4th. Just like using a ratchet to unscrew a bolt.Originally posted by 92 z28

I'd do the install on my car, but the instructions for replacing the stock cable with theirs is confusing.
Before anyone starts bashing, I have a huge problem with understanding written directions, I need verbal directions and I can pretty much do anything I'm told.
I think wiring in the new harness is alittle scary too.

Mine does or has done that before too...it happens when you kinda pull the shifter to the left towards the drivers side....you then gotta push it away towards the passenger side to make them cut off.....i found that out before I closed everything up....just gotta be careful when shifting...Originally posted by FrozenFirebird

do it yourself dude! That way you'll know whats going on with it if something every goes wrong with it...also I think you would take better care of cutting the shifter plate than a shope would...just take your time and if you run into a problem, stop and ask questions in here before you continue...I did and the install went fine...I took alot of pic of the install and problems I ran into...so if you need me Im here for ya....
