Does a 91 RS gage cluster work for an 89 RS??????????

I have an 89 Camaro RS and I recently bought a 95 Trans Am's T-56 for it. The new 6 speed has an electric speedometer plug. My T-5 was a mechanical. 90 models and up Camaros are electric and plug into the 6 speed. I was wondering if I could swap my 89 cluster for a 91 RS cluster. Would it fit? and does it plug up to the stock harness? Thanks for the replies. Eric

The speedo went VSS in 91. So no it wont bolt right up. It would require either a complete aftermarket solution, or extensive replacement of the 89 equipment to 91-92 specs. Then you would also need the conversion box to make the VSS signal from the T56 compatible with the 91 cluster (they have different pulses). You should contact Dakota Digital and see if they have a complete aftermarket solution. If they dont, you would have to upgrade the ECU to the 91-92 models and that means you would probably have to replace alot of other things I'm not aware of (i would guess the whole cluster backing plate that the cluster mounts into and maybe even the dash because the clusters have different sizes).

I'm getting ready to be in the same situation as you here pretty soon. I have a 90 (L03/700r4) with the cable speedo and I plan to swap in a T56 (and a L98). I've just decided to forget about the upgrade to 91-92 stuff and go straight to a 4th gen f-body dash.

u can swap clusters, but its a pain.. the 90-92 cluster is not a bolt in, u have to cut the dash and cluster to get it to fit and then bolt it down.. and the wiring harness is different.. do a search in the electronics forum for it.. i forget there names, but a few ppl have done it before.. if need be, ill dig thru my stuff and find the directions i used to do it..
