Differences in RS and Z28 for 1990-1992
Differences in RS and Z28 for 1990-1992
Yeah, it'smy first post, I know. But, I was here about six years ago and never got to get my 3rd gen. Now, I'm on the cusp again. I've found a respectable 1992 RS that I'd like to tear into. Basically, my plan is to swap a LT1/T56 an 4th gen T/A full interior.
Basically, I need to know exterior differences between the RS and Z28 for these years. I know the Z had the tall spoiler, but what else? Detailed pics would help my query.
Also, I've never seen how T's store in the 3rdgen. Same as the 4thgens?
Thanks in advance.

The only differences that I can think of, besides the emblems saying Z-28 and RS, is the hood, spoiler, front grill, and the TPI emblem on the rear bumper. That's it, everything else should be the same, even the ground effects.
exteriror?
the high rise and the hood, an RS will have a plain hood. if you are planing on swaping a LT1 into it then you don't need to worry about the 305 TBI in it. I think that is the only difference exerior wise
Ts are stored in the back in a bag that is straped down. there is no "slot" to fit it in, unless you make it yourself.
BTW welcome.

ok, the Z28 has the hood "power blisters" on the hood, and the rear high rise spoiler. also, all Z28s came with the 16" 5-spoke wheels, and only RSs with the L03 (V8) came with them. they were optional on the V6 cars. the Zs also had a "bowtie" grille, while the RS had the louvered one.
the tops store WAY better in the 4th gens. in the thirdgens, there is a bag that GM gives ya that you put them in, and it like "clips" to the inside of the car and just sits there. in the 4th gens, they have those little slots that they slide into.
i dont have any pics, but do a search and you will find a ton.
hope this helps..

Well, I found a 92 RS in my area for $3000. What I would like to do with the car is do a 'Heritage' Z28. I'd take the Z28 hood, spoiler and front grill, combine with a LT1/T56/1LE driveshaft (rear axle unknown), 4th gen T/A interior (dash, seats, console and door panels - preferably 98+), and hopefully an ATI S/C (if it will fit).
I want to make the 1992 Z28 GM should have made. Maybe even call it a 92.5 model. Best of both worlds, you know.
And actually, I plan on doing the same thing with a 69 model (from a 6cyl model). 396/M6 with a tall 2ndgen spoiler and late model interior. Hey, I like projects, and I like having exactly what I want.
Ideas on cost for all the swap stuff necessary?

From what ive seen your looking at about a 4,000$ LT1/T56 combo for a nice set. As for interior, ive seen 4th gen consoles from 50-200$.. seats go for 300-900... dash is probably real expensive also, door panels USUALLY come with the seats if you buy them on ebay, if not i dont think there expensive, although i hear its real difficult to relocate the handle and what not, being that the 4th gen handle is more toward the front of the car.
Hope that helps a little.

i'd buy into a car cheaper than that.
i know i could build my own all over again for a lot less if i knew what i do now.
show winning car easily 15,000-20 max.
strong daily driver 10-15,000 depending on choices.
7-10,000 for fun around town type toy.
just look for a solid body, the rest you'll eventually replace with something anyway so why buy a car with it.
if i had to do it all over again i'd find the cheapest good condition body i could find. strip it down to the frame and start working.
good luck.
