85 Berlinetta tach help
85 Berlinetta tach help
I recently purchased a 85 berlinetta. The digital dash shows speed and all but the light bars on my tach do not move
. The bottom two are green but do not go up. Am I just missing pushing the right button or something? (there are a lot) Appreciate any help. Thanks

My ex-girlfriend used to have one of those. I thought it was kinda hokie at the time, but now I think those cool as H E L L.
The only thing I can imagine is that the tach probably doesn't work.
Now I'm no expert though. I think she could switch a whole bunch of different setting( miles/kilos) etc., but I don't remember anything for the tach. I hope I'm wrong, and I hope someone else can be of more help than me.

I had an '84 berlinetta with the digital dash too.
There is suppose to be a wire with a ring at the end.I believe that it goes in or on the distributor coil somewhere.Sorry I don't know what color the wire is bit it comes through the driver's side of the firewall.
Check the top/side of the distributor. There is a little wire hookup with "tach" or something like that on it. Its pretty easy to find. Beyond that, have no idea. Berlinettas rock, but in GM's infinite wisdom, they limited the digital speedo to 85mph, the bastards.
Oh yeah, there are no buttons that would affect your tach either, thats one option they didnt give us.

What about the " TACH" button ? That button controls the Tach numeric readout at least !!!! If the Odometer turns into a numeric tach reaout than the Tach wire on the distributor is sending a signal and the cluster is getting it.
If the numeric Tachometer readout appears in place of the odometer reading ( & works ) than it's possible that some of the LEDS are burnt out on your "Bar graph" Tachometer. Since only the first 'few bars' are lighting up,............. It's possible that the LEDS above them are burnt out. Since the car idles at about 700-800 RPM those first 'few bars' are almost always lit when the car is running.
Each bar represents 125 RPM (or 1000RPM divided by 8 bars).
If the numeric display doesn't show a reading than there is a problem in the wiring or at the TACH lead from the distrib.
You can also check the WHITE wire in the middle of the firewall connector. There are 2 WHITE wires,........ the one closest to the CENTER of the connector is the TACH wire. ( The other white wire is for the Wipers !)
Good luck !!
