Has anybody ever used 145 overlays for a 115 cluster? I think that would be a LOT cheaper than finding a 145 spedo...and the only thing that I would have to do would be to change the gear....has anybody tried this, and if so, how did it turn out?

yea, lots of people do that, i'd bet good money that more people are running around with 85 speedos that have 145 overlays on them than there are people that buy 145 speedos, or maybe more than ever had 145 speedos. everyone does that, it's not a new idea.

IF IF IF, you do that then your odometer will be off... Speedo might read right tho...
then its illegal (If you get caught)

OK, this sounds interesting but where do you get the new speedo gauge gear, and what is the part number?
All info is welcome.
And will the mileage actually be thrown off???

First off just putting some decals on your gauge faces won't effect the odometer in any way. You are only putting decals on, you are not changing the ratios or anything like that.
But if you do put the 145 overlays onto your 85 mph speedo, then your speedo will not read correctly. The speedo is set up for a certian degree of sweep. With not not knowing what your speedo face looks like, lets say it has a 200 degree sweep divided by 85 mph. That's 2.35 deg. of movement per mph. Now lets say that the 145 speedo has the same 200 deg. sweep. That's 200 divided by 145, equals 1.379 mph per degree.
So you can't just put the decals on and be accurite with your speedo. I would say the best thing is to contact a speedometer shop and ask them if they can convert your 85 speedo to read with a 145 face. If not then you are stuck byung the 145 speedo.

my point is this:
like stated above, IF you take a 85 speedo and put on a 145 faceplate, then yes your speedo will not read correctly (BUT the Odometer will remain uneffected)
BUT if you change the gears in your transmission for a 145 Speedo, This would mean that you are in effect slowing down the rate your speedo reads, THEN you will be illegally changing the reading of your ODOMETER... Thats what you were wanting to do...
There is however another alternative, BUT you might want to get another speedo to do it to...
You take a Stock 85 MPH speedo, and inside there are two wings that go round and round around a disk, (or is it the other way I forget) Anyway the further away from one another these two pieces are the less of a reading you will get... because one drags the other. Does that make sence??? So you spread those little wings, and wala, it reads differently WITHOUT changing the accuracy of your Odomoeter

from what i heard they only persecute offenders that have cars from current date to 7 years back...
anyways i switched the entire speedo and i took the little numbers out (was careful with the paper on the back that rips if u do it half assed) took the small circular piece of metal retaining hte nubers off, fixed the odometer to match my old one and put it all back together. my speedo reads the correct miles just as if it were stock
.
on a related matter anyone with a 145 speedo for an 89 camaro they are willing to get rid of????

i didn't think the speedo had anything to do with it other than converting the signal to movement. I figured if you just changed the gear in the tailshaft to correspond to gear ratio and tire size it would work, regardless of what your speedo said stock.
