CrossFire Hood?

CrossFire Hood?

OK the difference in Crossfire hood and standard z28 hood was the Functional ram air scoops right? and how did they work? were they attached to the throtel cable and opened when you depress the throtel like blower scoops? or just opend when air hit em? cause i want one these hoods for my 84 z28 but will the little air scoops work? or can i modify mine to work like the crossfire hood?

I could very well be wrong but I think they were vacuum operated like the old musclecars were...I guess you couldmake them work on a carb'd z but I havent of anyone doing such a thing...sounds like a bada$$ idea though

thanks. do yall think it's posible to make a 84 z28 hood funcional like the crossfire hoods or do i have to get a crossfire hood?

They scoops are opened and closed by a 12 volt selinoid. At least the hood on the CFI equiped TA's were.

hmm i think it's vacume operated like russk said on the camaro, but does anyone think you can make a 1984 z28 functional like the CrossFire Hood?

I think you could if you wanted to do alot of cutting and fabing your own parts or using the stuff off of a crossfire hood. You really better getting a Ram Air II hood or getting the CFI hood used then going through that crap.

i think i read somewhere that its was vacum related. It pulled air in from under the hood untill a certain point maybe (WOT) and then the flaps would open up.
I just got an 83 Z28 crossfire all stock. Its not running due to a fuel tanks problem but when i get it running ill tell you how it works for real.

i beleive stock wiring and function worked like this... there was a vaccum switch...that when you floored the pedal...the vaccuum would drop..and signal the switch...which would i nturn shoot 12 volts to the solenoid that opened the flapper door.

btw if anyones interested i have a complete working CFI induction setup for sale...works perfect..solenoids even new. its off a 82 transam that came stock with CFI.

also you guys...you can wire the solenoid to a switch.. when WOT or whatever you can flip the switch manually...on my red 82 i also had this with a carbed motor,and had the air cleaner...you can actually tell a difference...when you flip the switch...its kinda cool.

Seems like a lot of fab work would be required to make that hood functional on a 4 barrel car. It sure sounded sweet when those flaps popped open, though.

i wouldn't think that be to hard lets see if you stuck a k&N X-treem top on it the carb sucks enough air to open the flapers cause i know on my cowl hood the filter sits prety far from the opening and will ry to suck leaves up and you can feel it pull your had so it sucks enough air but question is to find a crossfire hood i have seen only 1 on ebay and it went for like 50$ but had to pickup and no where near my area. but tomarrow i am going to the junkyard see what i can find.

I just saw a CFI style hood at a body shop I deliver to today. It was sitting in a corner, and there wasn't a car to go with it in sight. The owner was on the phone, so I couldn't ask about it. When I go out that way again I'll see what the story is on it.

The air cleaner from the Crossfire set up make a perfect seal with the opening in the hood. So it rams air into the intake. If you dont have a crossfire double aircleaner setup you wouldnt make a seal. It might let cold air in under the hood. But it wouldnt ram air into the intake. Ive heard stories of people hooking the flap up to the throtle cable. So the flap opens depending on how much gas you apply. But i have a question about if its raining out, woudnt it suck water into the engine?

i had one on ym 86 z28 which is now owned by my brother. Id post a pic of it for you guys, but apparently i cant cause im on probation.

i didnt catch what your setup was like, but if you have any kind of aftermarket intake setup with a carb, it wont clear with more than a 1" air cleaner on it, unless you can get something with a crazy drop on it. its damn tight. It does looke really cool though, the car is all white. the hood is fiberglass too.....feather lite....not like my harwood but lite none the less.

Will an aftermarket hood, like a ram-air hood, actually work with a crossfire setup? Thinking about restoring mine back to LU5 status, but the previous owner added some kind of turbo hood insert on the orginal hood.

i have one at home, it is solenoid operated and the ram air doors work, i'm thinking on installing it to my carbed 350 87 camaro, but sure needs some thinking and working.
unless somebody wants it, i'm in montreal canada.

I HAVE A 83 Z28 WITH THE CROSSFIRE HOOD , ITS FIBERGLASS , WOULD BE WILLING TO TRADE FOR A COWL INDUCTION HOOD.........THE PERSON THAT HAD THE CAR BEFORE ME SWAPED OUT THE CROSSFIRE FOR A CARB AND ALUMINUM INTAKE SETUP

I've got an 83 CFI hood on my car (86 IROC) it used to work until I fried the wires goin to my switch which triggered the soleniod...Everything is good on the hood to...but oh well

EDIT: I no longer have this hood it was replaced by a RAII hood

If you wanted the flaps to work on a carb you could use a microswitch on the carb linkage similar to a nitrous set up. The switch would activate the flaps at full throttle. Also depending on what intake you use the car will be VERY close to the ram air assembly. Maybe to close for an air cleaner.

The reason that GM discontinued the hood was because of water damage to engines

this is true... speaking as on who had this happen... i wired my hood to open and close manually with a switch... (this can done with a double pull double throw switch) i accidently left them open and had a big rain.... and it drained right down the carb tried to start it and bang.. backfire.... and a bent rod..... yehaa.. it also has clearance problems with an edelbrock intake and carb... ..... i will gladly trade it for a cowl induction if anyone is intersested

I have a Fiber Glass Crossfire hood on my 91 RS, (305, TBI) and I would like to know where to acquire a Vaccum activated switch? The only other way I can think of to make this happen would be wire it so they open when the car is on, then close when its off.

Is there any danger from water entering the TBI system while the car is running?

I have that scoop with the selenoid for sale. It was on my crossfire hood and I have a TPI so, I had no use for it. however, the whole scoop is a really cool contraption.
