i know i'm gonna get flamed but....
i'm probably going to get some brutal "soccer mom" comments for this one, but here it goes.
my first child was just born yesterday, and i was wondering if anyone has ever installed the clip necessary for a forward facing seat's harness to hook to in a 3rd gen? if so where? the gas tank is below and right behind the rear seat, would it have to go on the floor in the t-top well?
i'd hate to have my son restricted to driving in only the blazer until he's in school

Congratulations, man are things gonna change now. We had our daughter 18 months ago and I was just like you with all the new stuff. Especially the car seats. Only the newer cars actually have the place for the clip to clip into. We had a 93 Saturn SL and traded for a 2002 Malibu, it was'nt till we got the malibu home I realized what that strap actually was for and what it clipped into. Until we traded we just used the plain seat belt and then used the seat belt clip to hold it in place-that funky lookin H shaped thing. I guess you could weld a tab in the cargo area of your car for the hook, but really should'nt need it. Good luck

I would think that theres enough clearance between the floorpan and the gas tank for you to mount them at the top of the hump... just a guess however...
are you going to get him one of those spiffy 5 point harnesses for children from summit?

A common mounting point is to use the lower seatbelt attachment point under the rear lower seat cushions. Make sure that the bolts still thread in far enough after going through the new bracket holding the child seat clips, otherwise get slightly longer bolts.
With the forward facing seats, there's often a third attachment point going back toward the rear deck or hatch area from the top edge of the seat to keep the top of the child seat from rotating forward and into the front seatbacks. That would take some custom work to get done in the hatch. Make sure that it goes through more than just thin sheet metal though, like the thin sheet metal above the gas tank would be bad. Get on a portion of the rear frame area or a suspension mounting point or something else integrally sound. Look at it this way... you guys just had a kid and you get to show him how to use a power drill already!

Congrats! Nobody is going to call you a soccer mom because you're concerned for your kid's safety in your thirdgen. Anyway... since it's mostly all sheet metal back there, I would suggest that however you decide to mount it, that you put a steel plate on the other side of the sheetmetal so that the mounting bolt doesn't just pull through in an accident. This might get difficult though, because there probably isn't enough clearance above the gas tank, and the rear tail light area is double-panel. Your best bet might be to go between the upper and lower seat cushion directly into the backside of the gas tank hump, but you'll have to look at the tank to decide if there's sufficient room. You want to leave enough room so that if there's a collision, the bolt doesn't puncture the gas tank.

As Ham said, you can use the t-top mounting point right behind the seat or the one on the rear hatch area. Even if you car does not have ttops, the points are still there. The only thing you would have to do is go to a j/y and get one of the little "u" shaped things and the screws and it should fit right in. HTH and GL!!! Thomas

It's not required. You can go without if you tighten the seat belt really good. Here is some information on the subject.

Could always try going as far back as the taillight panel, too. You'd have to cut a notch in the rearmost hatch cover panel, against the taillight panel. Remove a taillight, drill some holes to mount the clip. When you screw the bolts in, use locktite so the nuts don't loosen, and squirt black silicone along the head of the bolt so water doesn't get in. Plan the holes well, so you can reinstall your taillights without hitting the clip screws.
Then cut a notch in the rearmost hatch cover panel to allow the webbing to poke through. If you wanted to hide the hole, you could always put carpet on the outside of the hatch panel.

It actually is required.... different restrictions in canada. talked to a police man friend of mine to confirm. we just have a rear facing for now, which is ok to just go with the seatbelts, but the front facing we'll need when he gets older needs the harness & clip.
so there's small hooks in t-top cars back there? anyone have some pics of those so i can get a better idea of where & what?
the blazer already has a hook for it in the rear cargo area, wish it was the bird tho, cause it would be a snap to get one in the truck
the thridgen is definately not going for a van tho, the wife hates them even more then me

they arent necessesserily hooks but they are small loopy things that the t-top bag hooks to. it is right on the hump where most people mount their amps.

Another way is to weld in a bar accross the rear of the car. Right behind the top of the rear seats. You'd have to trim your int panels a little bit. Then you can run some belts to the safety seat. Heres a quickey pic.
I had to edit, I had put you had to take out the rear seat which you obviously dont

my owners manual says that in 89 even the hard top cars got the t-top mounts for the canada cars so the safty seats could be used.

Congrats! When my daughter was born, I had no problem with her infant seat attaching with that "h" clip in the back seat. It can be a pain getting a baby that small out of that tight back seat area though. She is 4 now and loves to ride in daddy's Camaros...especially the 5-speed.
i was at k&s the other day (local speed shop) and saw THE car seat....simpson racing seat with 5 pt racing harness, looks like the real thing, but for the lil' ones. I'm definately saving up for one for my soon to be nephew or niece!
